Can globus pharyngis cause breathing troubles at night?

Hi all,

I've had stomach/reflux issues now for coming up to 4 years, been on omeprazole for about 3 years.

Until recently when I start PK diet. I stopped taking omeprazole altogether about 3 weeks ago now. I've taken it maybe once or twice over that time when I've noticed a touch of reflux but my symptoms usually got worst at night prior to omeprazole; 'full' feeling in chest, tight throat, globus feeling in throat and felt very 'sinusy'.

After being on it for a few months most of these symptoms lessened and became very minor.

Anyway, last night I noticed (and not for the first time since starting this diet) that I felt like my throat was closing over, breathing was quite difficult on back and presumably was experiencing that globus sensation again. At one point though, as I was almost dozing off, I really felt like my breathing was restricted and sat bolt upright gasping for air. After a few seconds (although it did feel like minutes) my breathing resumed normal service.

Has anybody else experienced similar? I can't really remember far back enough to recall if this happened before, prior to starting omeprazole but it was certainly scary and unpleasant. And just for clarification, it didn't feel the same as sleep apnoea (I have mild apnoea, which doesn't need treating).

Hi Dave, I suffer the same quite regularly, the feeling with me is I feel like my Adam’s apple goes high to the top of the neck/throat and I feel like I can’t swallow or when I am eating I feel like the food is going to get stuck in my throat. I also get the globes feeling in bed also and feel like I my breathing is getting cut off and that frightens the shit out of me, Itoohave to sit up in bed and my heart races. Hope this helps.

Take care

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for your response!

Yeah, I kind of became used to it but hadn't been for a long time and it scared the shit out of me last night too!

I'm sorry you also have to experience this but glad I'm not alone.

You can no longer get ranitidine or cimetidine in the UK as it was recalled a few years ago. Reflux/ulcers are now routinely treated with omeprazole or lansaprasole.

Feeling of tightness in throat and like throat is closing over could be sign of vocal cord dysfunction (or ILO).ENT can provide objective assessment though it doesn't always appear on endoscopy.

Speech pathologists trained in this area can give strategies to help.
