Microscopic Colitis

I thought I have had IBS-D for years, and I just got a different diagnosis which is Lymphocytic Microscopic Colitis with Gastritis. I don’t know if that is good, bad, or about the same thing. I appreciate the doctor finally getting to this diagnosis, but not very much information was given to me. Does anyone have this? I am to take 6 months of steroids to get rid of the inflammation. I need to start researching this to understand what it is. If anyone has suggestions for me, I would love to read them. Thank you.

There is a separate group on Healthunlocked called "Crohn's and Colitis Support". It might be a good idea to join that forum. I am sure that you will get lots of support on there. Good luck.

Hi Betseafel, I was also confirmed to have mircoscopic colitis and was prescribed a course of steriods. Unfortunately its rather different from colitis and crohns i found when researching and looking at groups. Thankfully following the steriod course, change in diet i have never been as ill as what i experienced at the beginning ( significant weight lose, loose stools all day, weak, fatigue). After a few colonoscopies and biopsies they found cell based i was extremely inflammed. I do still however have more ibs symptoms now, flip flop from contispation, loose and still am adjusting diet. I actually had a gastro appt in jan but it was cancelled due to covid. I was going to ask if the mircoscopic can be reoccurring, how to manage if so, and also manage how my stomach is now. I hope that helps a little but yes i didnt deem myself to be in the colitis group really, but everyone's symptoms and experience if different.

upr1210,Thank you for sharing. I had morning diarrhea for 6 months and lost a lot of weight. I’m down to a size 2. My GI doctor said it was IBS and to relax bc I was way too upset over all this. I finally went to another doctor, and he immediately did a colonoscopy and endoscopy with biopsies. Everything looked normal and my blood tests were normal. It was when the biopsies came back that showed gastritis and lymphatic colitis. Many people with IBS may have microscopic colitis and not know it because it can only be diagnosed with biopsies. Many women in their 60’s are getting microscopic colitis lately. I’m doing research to see what diet helps remission. The disease does have high reoccurrence. I’ve been following the low FODMAP diet and it is helpful. The research I read today said that the disease could be brought on from irritation brought on by antibiotics, NSAIDS, PPIs and other acid blockers, statins, stress, gut bacteria, and food sensitivities. Budesonide is the top medication so far that put patients into remission. I’m reading “Microscopic Colitis” by Wayne Persky. It’s very informative and easy to read. I hope this helps. Thank you for listening. Praying for our recovery.
