Anyone had stomach cramps, stabbing pains in the upper abdomen longer than a week? My dr says it sounds like acid reflux but can that cause pain and for nearly a week? Also been prescribed esomeprazole do they really work?

Gastric acid can cause stabbing pains, usually on the, centre just under your ribs.

Yes it can and it’s awful. Esomeprazole works very well for me. Investigations for me showed hiatus hernia and I’d burnt the bottom of my oesophagus. Also the dreaded weight! I was overweight and had to lose some. That helped I must admit

Keep taking the med. it will work

I do have a hiatus hernia and have done for since I had my 4th child 9 years ago but they won’t do anything for it at the moment, what else worked for you? I feel so bloated and gassy at mo x

Try ginger tea if you are bloated and gassy.

So sorry to read this. Everyone on here is unique so you have to keep trying different things. My flare ups can last months. IBS and acid reflux go hand in hand. Stress can set things off. It doesn’t take much for me despite looking at everything I eat too but still am none the wiser. When your colon starts to spasm; that causes the pain. If certain food causes irritation and can’t be digested, it’s pushed fast through your system and can lead to diarrhoea. Undigested food starts to ferment in gut and cause gas. Gas inflates the stomach so the valves are forced open allowing its contents to leak and irritate your oesophagus which is acid reflux. For me, Esomeprazole doesn’t do anything. None of the PPI do but I understand it’s the best of the bunch and could be good for GERD. . I’ve tried everything. Recently I just stopped eating except for soup and boiled eggs to give everything a chance to calm dow and heal. This works for me. The bitter taste in my mouth, the burnt tongue syndrome, sore throat is receding thank goodness. For this month. It’s been 4 weeks.

I’m talking to my homeopath tomorrow who treats me for raw nerve endings and to recalibrate the nervous system and it’s worked well for me. I also take Alflorex pro biotics which regulates me marvellously and stopped the diarrhoea. I drink fresh ginger constantly which soothes and stops nausea. I read Esomeprazole can cause gas and cramps even though it’s reducing acid in the stomach. Vicious circle! Good luck.

Thank you, I have had a few anxiety attacks recently coz my hubby had covid then I had it and my stomach was good for a few weeks then it started last week out the blue so may be anxiety caused the flare up, the dr don’t seem to worry as it comes and goes but when it comes it’s horrible I can’t think of anything else, I read that esomeprazole causes gas and cramps yet it’s what I want cured, I’m gonna try some ginger tea, I just want to burp but can’t grrr lol
