My mum has had a lot of issues with trapped wind at night and it makes her really upset. It stops her being able to sleep/get to sleep. She has tried many IBS/wind tablets and they don't really seem to help. She avoid things like fizzy drinks/drinking a lot/fast food etc. Any ideas how to get rid of it? What was the name of that probiotic that's recommended for IBS and can you get it non-prescription.
thanks

The probiotic that has been scientifically studied for IBS is Aflorex. She could also try enteric coated peppermint. Rennie Deflatine works for me (but isn't a long term solution).
Do you mean Rennie Deflatine? I've just looked up ingredients and it does contain sorbitol. However, it depends if you are sensitive to sorbitol or whether product contains enough sorbitol to make any difference.
She could try avoiding things like onion, garlic and beans with her evening meal and see if that helps. I find ginger is far more effective than mint for wind symptoms too so that might be worth trying. You can get ginger tablets or ginger tea fairly easily A totally off the wall suggestion that I'll admit to not having tried yet myself is yoga. I've noticed a couple of short yoga routines on YouTube for trapped wind/bloating/gas and if your mum is fit enough it might be a gentle, medicine free way of easing the symptoms. Again I've not tried it myself so I'm not able to give an opinion on how effective it is.
She avoids onions and garlics like the plague. I'll try recommending the ginger tablets, she's tried peppermint capsules but I don't think that helped. thanks
I would definitely recommend Alflorex. Play around with food. I now use lactose free milk and little or no bread. However it’s the Alflorex that has made a big difference. It’s not cheap and can take a couple of months to kick in but has helped me a lot. Also ask doctor for some sleeping tablets. I have Zopiclone on hand and take one if I’ve had a couple of bad nights in a row. Use sparingly.
Tell mum not to eat or drink too late in the evening, she should also chew small mouthfuls of food very very well, before swallowing. Also if she could drink two litres of water each day and take a brisk 1-mile walk, she should feel much better in herself and have no (or very little) need of more chemicals and medicines. Good luck, keep well and stay safe.
She likes to ride her bike but I can never imagine her taking a mile walk every day lol. She prefers to stay in and watch the telly, especially in Winter. She also mainly drinks tea and squash, she's kind of stuck in her ways so hard to make her do something different.
