Oatly milk?

Hi

I have had IBS for just over a year and the only thing that triggered symptoms for me was lactose so i stopped drinking any milk from animals and went on a very long journey trying different plant milks to find one i liked. I have tried over 20 different plant milks and only 1 i liked , oatly i like all there milks but the semi is my fave, i have been using this milk for about 6mths and have been fine until now and i seem to be getting symptoms again. I think its the oatly but not sure why its all of a sudden causing issues. What could be the reason for oatly causing issues?

IBS can be very complex and symptoms and triggers can change over time. Personally I would doubt that it’s the oatly milk. Oats are one of the few foods I never had a problem with since my IBS started. Have you noticed any problems after certain meals or ingredients? Or did you have a lot of stress recently? My symptoms generally set in anywhere between hours to up to 2 days after I ate a meal that contains a trigger food. The amount can be very little to cause trouble for your digestive system. Stress can make symptoms worse and the impact can be delayed too.

Which Oatly milk? Some have other ingredients - B12 etc added. I can only tolerate one brand of manufactured B12. Non dairy foods with B12 added often trigger intolerance symptoms. Also, if you have an issue with gluten, Oatly is not gluten free. They're very clear about that on the website. Some of their versions also have oil added too. Good luck!

Good morning, For me it's the Lactose in the milk I have an issue with, so I use Lactose free products. Have you been tested for lactose intolerance, as it could be that and not dairy as a whole. I do avoid all dairy but the lactose free cheese and milk are really nice. Good luck xx

Hi I too have oatly milk which I love and I also eat porridge everyday. My symptoms are still pretty terrible (always have been) but I’m now thinking the porridge etc is making it worse. Could be wrong but was interesting to read your post saying the same. Might need to research it!

Thanks for everyones replies, i dont eat oats But I'm not gluten intolerant as i can eat bread fine. I have not been tested for lactose intolerance as my doctor doesn't see the point when i know its that.

Im going to cut out the hot chocolate that i normally have incase its the chocolate causing the symptoms. So ill see how i go drinking oatly on its own.

The oatly i drink is the semi version.

I also want to say i know its not dairy its self that i have an issue with as i can eat hard cheeses and Philadelphia cheese ok and i can have kefir yogurt ok too. So im pretty certain its lactose. The thing is i tried the lactose free milk but i still had symptoms which was weird. Thats why i went plant based for my milk.

Hi,

I’d stick with the Oatly, as several others have suggested.

I’ve been using it for years now and never found it to be a problem (I’ve had IBSd for over 40 years) - indeed, I had a phase of buying oat bran to add to other foods, in the belief that it ‘bulked up’ my bm’s by absorbing excess fluid. I also use Fybogel, on the same basis.

I’d look closely at the other elements of your diet for the culprit- especially using the FODMAP lists.

It helps to have at least a rough idea of the ‘transit time’ of your food, so that you can identify the ingredient(s) that caused a given day’s problems.

For me it’s about ‘a day and a meal’ - ie problems in an afternoon would be caused by the previous day’s breakfast or lunch!

Hope that helps.

Thought i should update , yesterday i had a meal my sister cooked and then last night was in hell on the loo. Now I've had this meal before and never had an issue so i phoned her up to ask if anything was different about the meal amd she said the only thimg different was that she used a new oil. Rapeseed oil , i did not have any oatly yesterday so i looked on the ingredients and there is rapessed oil in oatly so i think its the oil that is causing my symptoms.

I only have mild IBS as my symptoms only come on that night or the next morning and last for about 2hrs until ive finished on the loo then im fine again.

We have to be super observant about additives in food, and yes they are everywhere. I am pretty intolerant to oats as it goes, which sounds unusual. If you want plant milks pick organic if you can as they contain less additives. People don’t realise how bad thinks like sugar alcohols are for us e.g sorbitol and xylitol ,even a sniff of that is like poison to me, We can be more sensitive than we think, so even something as innocent as plant milk could contain a problem.

I have alpro soya milk myself. Not a fan of the oat milk. I stay away from anything dairy, chocolate , cheese, anything thats even looked at milk.lol. Only vegs are carrots, peas, green beans, very well cooked. No chicken or fish. Dont have the normal sort of oats. I have ready brek if i have any. Vit d, and zinc supplement. Nhs recommended amounts. I could go on but these are some of the things that work for me.

Hey, I've been drinking oats milk for over 10yrs as my staple, I can't see anything in the milk that would affect your stomach. Maybe you could regulate the quantity you were having daily and see how that goes.

I am similar but recently switched to the Oatly No Added Sugars carton. Although I don't use much of it daily just in my cuppa teas. Hope this helps.
