Hi

Just wondering if anyone here has problems with garlic and it affecting their bowels?

If so what symptoms do you get and how long does it take for you to feel them?

Thanks

Oh yes, garlic can be a problem for me although everyone is different. I often have D the following day.

Yes I find garlic, mustard and onions set me off usually diarrhoea the following day or later on the same day

Thank you for your replies. I've been having similar symptoms for a few months now, tried varios things with no success but now suspecting garlic is the possible culprit

Yes! You cannot eat garlic or any thing from the onion family if you have bowel problems. I cannot stress that enough! If you have IBS it is lethal.

If you are suffering from IBS you should follow the Low Fodmaps diet. Lots of fruits and veggies can cause pain and the runs.

Yes it is now I ate it every day of my life till 2 years ago as it now gives me cramps - fed up as I love it but sometimes I just risk it!

Garlic is high in FODMAPs which is why you may experience symptoms. However that does NOT mean you need to exclude it (or onions for that matter) for ever. I take Allicin tablets which is the active ingredient in garlic to kill a bacterial overgrowth. It can also be taken for fungal; overgrowth and it can cause a bit of gas (which is down to a die off reaction).

Garlic is high in Fructans, which is a fodmap. Its one of the highest fodmap foods. Check out the low fodmap diet, monash university have an app you can search food on and check to see if they are high on the list.

Garlic is high FODMAP

I love garlic but it doesn't like me sadly. I get bloated, have very noisy bowels and smelly wind.
