IBS and Internal Hemarrhoids

Hi,

I have had IBS for 6 years. It became apparent that I was not going to the toilet without the help of a laxative. I stopped immediately when I realised the error of my ways, Im so embarrassed I could have done damage to myself. I have ribbon like poops every 3 days and a tiny tiny amount of blood when I wipe. I am awaiting seeing a colorectal surgeon but I am really concerned it could be something more than internal hemarrhoids like my Drs thinks.

Looking for any positive stories before I lose my mind

I had a simlar problem about 18 months ago, but it was the hospital and GI doctors who gave me the laxatives. They then changed to enemas and suppositories, as they wouldn't cause so much damage to any area if I was blocked (obstructed). Unfortunately, I can't give you much comfort, as I am still on daily suppositories and weekly enemas.

Thank you for your reply. When I had my colonoscopy 6 years ago I was diagnosed with a twist in the bowel also. However, this does not seem to be causing me any discomfort. My mind is running away with itself, I have a video appt on 5th October with a colorectal surgeon, I am so scared it is something worse

With this illness you can't help but worry, it is one of the many consistant points you will see on all posts. All I can say is that I have had problems for 53 years now, and I am still going strong. The GI and colorectal surgeons are quite good with their estimation of what is wrong and what you need to put you right, I have found, even if,sometimes, you feel as though they are messing you around. I have been told that I will probably need suppositories on a daily basis for the rest of my life, but I would sooner that than the alternative. All I can say is good luck, keep well and stay safe.

The rational side of my brain is saying it's likely hemorrhoids due to the need for laxatives but the irrational side tells me its bad. Pleased I have an appointment to hopefully start the ball rolling. My mother also had polyps removed some years ago. Thank you very much and stay well too :)

I have this problem with IBS-C. I've also been frightened at how easily my body gets addicted to laxatives and how hard it is to get off. I've had success by trying to ensure I have a daily stool (when I was younger this was more of a 2-3 day event). I do this by consuming kimchi or saurkraut or hot peppers or wasabi --things that keep my system moving with only few twinges in the colon.

Hi pgiese,

As an IBS c sufferer I was delighted to find another with the same problems as myself!

I would love to not rely on laxatives but have only just managed to get into a regular routine as it were.

My main concern is taking these long term, how do you eat sauerkraut etc without causing things to get worse?

Every body is different. For me, if I have about 1-2 cups of sauerkraut/kimchi or jalapenos in a breakfast burrito or other food with chillis, it's enough for me to have a daily stool movement. I've been doing this for the past 2-3 years and it's improved my IBS overall. I think the trick is to find foods that help movement without causing too much pain or cramping. My mother says winter squash does the trick for her!

I have to rely on laxatives as well . I had all the test and told I’ve got a loopy bowel and diverticulitis . And nothing they can do just Laxido one or two a day plus constella 290 for the pain . But I go between constipation and loose stools . Kiwis are suppose to help eat 2a day . But in pain quite a lot I also take yakult . Doctors just tell me I’ve had all the tests just diet . Plus I’ve got a borrowing of part of my bowel . So building up the courage to phone my doctor as pass 3weeks has been bad . I’m 65 and only suffered this since last July . And I’ve but just have to keep going . Doctor told me iget have to take laxido long term . Hope you get help and relief soon .

Hello readmeastory,

I have a loopy bowel too, and yes diet seems to be the key to managing this problem we have. Ask to see a dietitian they can help a little. The low Fod map diet is tricky but helps sort out what makes symptoms worse. Alfloex is a probiotic that helps me and worth trying. I also subscribe to alittlebityummy, which is great with lovely recipes! Hope this helps a little.

This is how I feel. Scary when I realised how long I have been relying on laxatives. Are your stools also narrow? I have a call with my consultant in 8 days

Thank you for your reply. I am so concerned by how narrow my poop is. Is this normal with hemorrhoids and IBS poop? Do you experience similar? Its such a minefield

Hi! I was also initially diagnosed with internal haemorrhoids but it turned out to be a little tear which can be extremely painful at times...blood in the bowl and/or paper can be a sign of this.

I suffered badly from both constipation and diarrhoea and am now following the low fodmap diet which is helping to keep things moving more normally.

Good luck and fingers crossed

Thank you. I hope for me it is just that and not something else. It seems sometimes the haemorrhoids bleed and sometimes don't but I can 'feel' the lumps when I wipe. Then they go away again. Worried about how thin my stools are but wondering if its the internal piles making it so.

Hello, I have had IBS C, for over 7 years and have only recently found a way of controlling the constipation.

Before Breakfast: take 2 prunes before DVD exercise video (Rosemary Colney) or any form of exercise to get the bowels moving.

Then have a peach, with Honey Cornflakes (gluten free) with a chopped banana.

Tea: 1 prune before tea and then 2 prunes afterwards with my jelly and soya vanilla pot (tastes like custard and found in the gluten free isle), really yummy.

Also at least 3 pints of water a day (drunk from a pint glass as easy to remember how many pints I've drunk).

Have one more piece of fruit in the evening, for me, its either a pear or a banana.

Avoid fatty food.

I have tried lots of other remedies, weetabix, all bran, milk of magnesia, syrup of figs, prune juice, psylium husks, metamucil, senokots, which were all either too much or not enough.

Good luck on resolving your problems. Kind regards.
