Hi All

I have been taking omeprazole 20mg daily for just under 3 months now to control acidity. I think its making me constipated. I have no natural urge to go to the toilet. I have to apply some pressure to get a small bowel movement daily.

Has anyone had similar issue with omeprazole?

Can the side effect last so long . I would have thought that the body would have adjusted itself in 3 months

Check out the side effects of Omeprazole. See your Dr for laxatives. Look at dietary changes for more bland foods and watch out for anxiety as it will cause stomach problems and acid.

Constipation is one of the listed side effect of omeprazole but I would havr thought that after 9 weeks my body would have adjusted itself to the medication.

The problem is that I can have some bowel movement on most days but this is with some force not as a result of natural urge

Still have side effects after 6 years of taking Omeprazole, you don't always get used to them. Fortunately I'm able to counter them as Omeprazole works for me when other stuff is little more than candy to me.

I have had no proper urge for sometime now , now in my late forties , I just tended to rely any sort of pressure feeling or making myself go everyday few days

Going to the loo was getting worse and worse

I also suffered with bloating /discomfort/stomach /abdominal pains which I’d struggled with for most of my adult life

I was completely fed up with it all so after seeing a GP who actually wanted to help and listen I decided to go gluten free and he put me on Laxido twice a day for 2 weeks

So pleased I went to see him as now all my stomach / reflux issues have gone , I can sleep at night without tossing and turning all the time

As regards bowel movements I tried to sit down at the same time every morning and the laxido really helped to soften the stools but after 4/5 days after coming off it it was beginning to revert back to how it was , basically just pebbles

I’m increasing fibre and drinking more than ever but I must admit I think there’s an underlying reason which I can’t quite put my finger on yet

I’m hoping I can find an eventual reason but at the min I take laxido every other day just to keep me from worrying about going to the loo every time, I just need to find a natural way to remedy it

I hope you can find some answers

It does make you constipated that’s why I don’t take mine every day, just when I need it.

Make sure you drink enough water.

I took omeprazole for a week and I took myself off it as I saw that friends and family are now very much reliant on it. I just control it via my diet. Interestinyo enough I now think I actually think I have low stomach acid not high but it isn't really something doctors recognise.

You may want to look at either just using it as and when you need it or look into whether you can control it through diet.

I have IBS C anyway so I am always constipated on off anyway 😂
