Sulfur burps

Hi guys I'm. New here. I'm here as I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel. I was told over the phone (rubbish doctors) it sounds like ibs this was years ago recently I have been doctors and its taken month to get a ball rolling but still waiting for the appointments. It started months ago I started getting sulfur burps (gross I know) and its horrible and I end up burping it out and being sick then the run to the toilet. This is my life at the moment, I have always been dairy intolerant from when I was told rubbishy that it could be ibs but this time it was different it was everything so I started eating free from stuff all the time and now I can't eat that either. I haven't eaten properly for a week now I have had free from slice of toast that's it. In three months I have lost 3 and half stone. The doctors ain't bothered. It's fustrating. Is there anyone out there with a similar story. Especially with the sulfur burps. I'm lost and don't know what to do.

Thank you guys.

Obviously, there is something wrong going on. Are you passing wind down below? Do you have diarrhoea or constipation? Do you have any tummy pains?

I know I spoke to a dietian on the phone and I said I understand about waiting times for appointment but I'm not eating could you give me some sort of advice and she said nothing. Yes I am all the time but if I'm constipated then no. I'm between both ill have diarrhoea for a couple of days then constipation. It goes round and round. I bloat every afternoon even if I have had free from stuff. I have gallstones I got an appointment next week to see if they will take it out but I am a bigger lady but have lost lots of weight but don't think they will operate on me. I think it's ibs but the gallstones are contributing to all of this eveytime I eat I get gallstone pain on the right and left side and all over my back.. I just need help on diet and relaxing techniques as my life is rather stressful right now and it flares up when I'm stressed, well thats what I think anyway but got to wait months for anything I have already waiting since March and found out yesterday that they never sent the appointment through. Thank you for the reply.

Hello Water_girl!

I'm sorry you are having trouble eating and have to deal with these awful burps and rubbish doctors!

What you describe happened to me in the past and there were different causes. The main one was a problem with ketosis due to not eating because I felt unwell, and the doctor told me to drink a glass of coke (anything sugary will do) and the smell and burps disappeared. When you are in ketosis or acetonemia, your breath smells funny, like rotten fruit. I used to get that a lot as a kid. Then when I developed IBS, the burps were linked to constipation or indigestion and that was fixed with milk thistle and probiotics. And the latest incident was because of a medication called Lysox (Acetylcysteine, used to treat coughing) it caused rotten eggs burps so bad I felt like throwing up. I was in class in high school and it was agony. I think the sulfur odour is caused by the liver and stomach having troubles, either as a consequence of SIBO as suggested by mick2561, medication or malabsorption/indigestion. You said you have a gallstones issue so that might be the cause as well. Were you able to eat anything today? Try apple sauce and a bit of rice, it's extremely easy to digest and will give you glucose to fight the ketosis. I hope you will get better

Good luck!

I'm hoping it's the gallstones as I have always managed to control my IBS. I'm just hoping the hospital will say yes to the op at least that way I can aliminate the gallstones. Thank you I will try some of the food options you suggested.

Thank you

Good luck with the surgery, wishing you all the best! ☀️

My condition is slightly improved although I'm in a very stressful situation (dad is very sick and will stay at the hospital for another week) but I hope it'll get better :)

Take care 😊

Oh no I'm sorry to hear that hope he gets better soon. Yes just waiting to hear now. I'm trying low fodmap diet and it's working at the moment but some of it isn't agreeing with my gallstones so every day I'm in pain. I'm finding stress hard as well I try my best to calm but life just isn't easy is it. Take care ☺️

hello :)

thank you for your good wishes!

I'm sorry to hear about your pain! Have you noticed what kind of food or elements of the fodmap diet triggers this pain? What kind of fat do you use to cook? I recall my sister (fellow ibs sufferer and following the fodmap diet as well) telling me she couldn't digest fried oil and so tries to steam food and cook in a non stick pan(and add olive oil after cooking, just for taste). Maybe something to try for you?

I hope you are booked very soon for that surgery and finally feel better!

Is there anything that helps you cope with stress?

take care 😊

You can put insist on a referral to gastroenterologist!! Take someone with you to go as a back up. How old are you if you don’t mind me asking?? I can’t eat free from bread there are lots of stuff in free from that you may not tolerate. I got sent to a clinical dietitian from hospital to help me with what to eat an what not to eat. I find lm better with plane rice crackers or boiled white rice if lm really bad. A doc at hospital told me to drink the water that the rice had been cooked in once cooled down to help stop the lbm.

Hello. I'm 28 but had the eggy burps since I was 16. I explained on the phone its ergent and they told me to go a and e.... I'm one of those people that don't want to use a and e 1 because in my eyes its for extreme illness and 2. I would be up there for 6-8 hours. I can't with a little one. They said I'd have to wait till September time. Thank you I'm just so anxious trying anything as it knocks me for 6 for like 2 days and I got to work and look after my little one. I just given up.

I have been useing a product called enterosol gel it’s helped me An is all bacterial or silicol gel burg Holland an barret. I only ask how old as if you were much older they would send you to hospital under 2week eurgent referral as you have list so much weight. Try eating very small amounts even couple spoons plane rice see how you get on. I would also get some dioralite as it’s got glucose an salts that your body is probably crying out for.

Has the low FODMAP diet ever been suggested to you? I tried a diet free from lactose, gluten, egg etc using free from products and eating what I thought was healthy food like veg and fruit and my problems still persisted. I was referred to a gastroenterologist and he started me on the low FODMAP diet and my overall health has massively improved. There’s an app from the Monash University that really guided me through the diet and what FODMAP’s are and how reducing them in your diet can help. Not eating is going to have serious impacts on your health. Wishing you well soon x
