Feeling ill all over when reducing lansoprazole dose from 30 to 15

I have IBS ( as well as CFS/ ME and a lung condition Bronchiectasis). I have been taking lansoprazole 30 for 2 years due to silent reflux and to possibly help my lung condition.

A week ago I have reduced the dose from 30 daily to 15 daily. I’m feeling increasingly ill all over ... flu like, exhaustion plus abit queasy. I expected to feel queasy but not the fatigue. It could well be an exacerbation of ME/ CFS but just wondered if anyone else has experienced this ill feeling when reducing dose as helpful to know the cause.

Thank you x

Omeprazole and lansoprezole are drugs called proton pump inhibitors. They are designed to stop the proton pumps in your stomach from working. Proton pumps induce your stomach into making acid. Acid is essential for the digestion of food and for killing pathogenic bacteria. They are designed for short term use of up to 8 weeks only. They are known for limiting your ability to absorb B12 from your food. B12 drives your central nervous system and a lack of it can give neuropathy and fatigue amongst a host of other conditions. It’s potentially very dangerous. I would ask your GP yo check your B12 levels and ask for a copy of the results and post them back here. A lack of stomach acidity causes an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in your stomach and is responsible for pain, inflammation and bloating. It can also cause fungal overgrowth with Candida which slain causes inflammatory responses as well as aches, pains and fatigue. There’s growing evidence that IBS is linked to harmful bacteria caused by low stomach acidity but it’s not quite there yet. Doctors are too quick to prescribe drugs like omeprazole and leave people on them for too long causing awful problems. I’m not medically qualified but have discovered all of these things myself having suffered all of them. I wish you well

I have suffered from Ulcerative Colitis for over 40 years.

I had to leave work due to Me/CFS in 1999.

The ME caused many sensitivities, one of which was an intolerance to medication for Ulcerative Colitis. I decided to try going gluten free after a private allergy test. I'm not celiac.

Eliminating gluten from my diet has been a great help.

Since going gluten free I found I didn't need my omeprazole anymore. I weaned off it relatively easily and just use gaviscon or similar if I have any problems, (usually because I have had some gluten by mistake)

Hope this helps.

Regards
