Hi there - if there is any consolation I have read from various sources that certain bacteria crave sugar to feed on which makes us crave sugar. In other words when you can't help eat sugar blame the bad bacteria! At least that is what I do since I have been trying hard to cut back on sugar and find it really hard.

I tend to have fizzy drinks when I get stressed at work which sets my ibs off

I used to go for Coke too. Now I have an occasional Coke out of choice and for pleasure.

As an NLP practitioner I see that many types of addiction come from filling up a void. In short it's a way of nurturing yourself and of giving yourself love. You say that you drink Coke when you get stressed at work, so that fits.

For me, the real question is what stresses you out at work and why. You may have coworkers that don't get stressed by the same things as you do in quite the same way. This trigger will be of unique importance to you. Try to pinpoint the exact feeling you have when you go for the Coke. And why this feeling stirs you up. Maybe you have had a past experience that this harks back to. It would be useful to ask someone close to be a mirror, because a lot of this we can't easily see for ourselves.

If you can dismantle this trigger it is my hunch that you will see a marked improvement in your IBS symptoms.

You might find this article on trigger loops helpful: sickofibs.com/ibs-triggers/...

Hope this helps,

Alison

Really, really bad for your health. May not be easy, but you need to wean yourself off. Bad for IBS, bad for blood sugar.

I feel your pain, i was in exactly the same position. I promise you though if you put your mind to it you can stop. I did. Took a couple of weeks but i just started having water or robinsons where i would usually have fizz. Stopped having it in the house at all and that really helped. Now i have it as an occasional treat and i feel so much better for it. Hope you manage to crack it

Hi, have a look at a book called " The clever guts diet". It goes into depth about the digestive system and especially the gut bacteria, how they affect us and how to improve them - I found it a really interesting read!

I do have sympathy. I became addicted to sugar free gum and I think that’s caused my ibs. So switching to non sugar alternatives may not help you either. My worry would also be for teeth and bones too. Do you talk to anyone about it all?
