Does anyone else ever wake up in the night feeling feverish with nausea and needing to pass a bowel movement? Sometimes I don’t know if it’s IBS or something more. I felt hungry when I went to bed then woke at 3am feeling like this? Any answers would be appreciated! I feel awful

Waking in night feeling terrible! What’s wrong with me?! Any help appreciated!
hi Emmy, yes, I've had exactly that. Usually only when I've eaten out, so maybe higher fat meal than I would normally at home. Actually feels like I'm properly poorly - really horrid, I feel for you. I'm coeliac too so initially I assumed I was getting glutened but I really don't think so (I am super super careful, check kitchens etc etc).
Having said that, I've just seen a dietitian who has firmly said she doesn't think I have IBS (which she specialises in) but maybe microscopic colitis or Bile Acid Malabsorption. Exhausted with it all tbh
Hope you feel better soon X
Thanks for your reply. It is all so exhausting isn’t it! I’m terrible with eating out too. I actually don’t really bother eating out now, it’s just not worth it. I also find that it can make me feel like I have a virus. I hope you manage to find out what is causing your issues. Have you asked to be referred to a gastroenterologist?
Hi Emmy. Yes I’m seeing gastro same time as dietitian (they do seem to be talking to each other which is great). Starting drugs for bile acid malabsorption next week crossing fingers.
Having said that I risked going out to eat last night - lovely (and def high fat!) and fully expected to pay the price overnight or this morning and nothing! Absolutely bizarre must be first time in years haven’t rushed to the loo overnight or first thing. Go figure 🙄😂.
Hope you get some answers x
Best to check with a doctor. IBS usually doesn't cause fevers.
Yes, this has happened to me on occasion. It's very unpleasant. My guess is that the autonomic nervous system is involved. I don't run a temperature, I am simply sweating buckets and am feeling extremely hot and sick. My pulse is usually through the roof, too, Once I have had a bowel movement it slowly calms down. This can happen once a week for a couple of weeks, then I won't experience it again for months - or even a year.
However, if this is new to you, then mention it to your GP.
Have you ever been tested for diverticular disease? If you have not been to your GP then please go let he/she get you tested for IBD not IBS
I had a colonoscopy and I think they can tell wether you have diverticulitis with this test. It came back clear so they confirmed IBS. They did notice how incredibly sensitive my stomach is when they put the gas in my tummy. I have another condition called endometriosis which complicates things as it has many of the same symptoms as IBS.
Yes, a colonoscopy can see if you have diverticular disease. Ah! Endo that is an added problem-I also had Endo and I know how painful it can be and there were times just before a period that I felt if I had the flu and used to wake up in the night hot and uncomfortable. Don't give up Emmy-89 there is an answer out there, keep pestering your GP. Good Luck and let us know how you get on
Hello,
That is awful. I am sorry to hear that you are feeling this way.
What kind of food do you eat? Is there any medication you take? Do you have acid reflux issue?
