FODMAP

I have a friend that has just been diagnosed with IBS and the Dr has suggested the Fodmap diet. I have been trying to find which foods she should avoid and which are good. As I have never used this method, I am not very up on it, and didn't find a website that was very helpful. Can anyone suggest the best web site or have a detailed list of foods etc.?

Hi I found diet sheets on the internet by just entering "low FODMAP diet" the book has the same title"the Complete FODMAP Diet" by Sue Shepherd and Dr Peter Gibson. I have been following this way of eating for 4 months and it has changed my life. It is very easy but you have to be strict. You can eat steak and chips and bacon and egg etc. It is also available from the library.

Monash University in Melbourne have an app for low FODMAP diet. It is excellent with coverage of most foods. I use it almost every day and it has helped me considerably with my IBS. Going to a Dietician also helped me.

Your friend should ask to be referred to a decent dietician. Probably a hospital one and not the local GP one. There are books out there with recipes but you will find the information a bit conflicting. e.g. one book may say no Almonds whilst another provides a recipe for cake with Almonds in! I think the most important thing though is diet and symptom diary. Also ask the GP for pain relief during reintroduction phase. Also tell your friend that if the diet doesn't work for them to not worry. I've not found the diet hugely useful but someone on this forum pointed out it's just a case of working out what does/doesn't work for me. And this diet is a good starting point.

That is my problem with the FODMAP diet. It contradicts itself and what I know I can eat. almonds, ditto all nuts, seeds, and skins, are a no no for me. I tried some cherries last week which may or may not have been a good idea. The trouble was that I have since found that the Weight Watchers malted bread is not the same as the malted bread that Tesco use for their sandwiches. So it may have been the cherries, or it may have been the bread. I have bought a small amount of cherries again today just to check. Only time will tell, at least I should know later tonight which way the wind blows - literally!

Hi Alison. Very interesting - again it points to food that should be okay apart from on the FODMAP. This article is quite accessible. FODMAP isn't - you have to go to a dietician. You won't get re-intro advice without a dietician - though the dietician I had had not idea what to say to me. When I contacted FODMAP experts they refused to help (Kings College London). I've had to work out the re-intro myself. But this artile will be really helpful for that. Thank you for posting.
