Completely unresponsive to all laxatives...

Hi all,

I just wondered if any of you are also the same with laxatives?

I have a stomach of steel when it comes to anything being food or medication. I suffer severely with constipation to the point I’m now chronically impacted and the hospital are at whits at with having to come up with a didn’t strategy as I’ve worked my way through all the laxative options and had no luck. I did warn them this would be the outcome.

I’m also concerned there might be something else going on here as they have said they have never had a case where someone’s body has been so stubborn. I thought this was a symptom of STC so just putting it out there??

I do know we all suffer differently and some have C and then D but I can honestly say I have never been one to experience D.

I am the same as you. I have never had a bowel movement on my own, even as a baby I was on medication. I’m 50 now and my body has got used to all the laxative products I’ve ever had. Have you tried Manevac, movicol, bisacodyl, prucalopride, linaclotide? If not, you could get your medics to try them for you. Have you had pressure tests? They include balloons inside your bottom and test the strength of your inner & outer sphincter muscles ( these turned out to be part of my problem), if not, these might give you some answers- good luck!

Hi Julie,

I had the balloon test 5 years ago when they told me a had STC and a mega colon it has been manageable since with a SNS device but the battery has now died. Due to this I am suffering immensely with fecal impaction and nothing will shift it.

As my nerves don’t work properly I’ve always been completely unresponsive to laxatives. Not sure if this has just become a lot worse of whether there is something other. It’s the not knowing that’s hard as you don’t know what’s to do for the best.

Last week the hospital gave me a double dose of moviprep which didn’t work and over the weekend I have done;

8x sachets of movicol per day

2x senokot per day

2x Dioctyl per day

15ml of lactulose 3times a day

1x Linaclotide (with food has more chance to cause diarrhoea)

2x Enema per day

I spoke to the hospital and they said to go back down yesterday. I collected something called Gastrografin which is their last resort before I can see a colorectal surgeon... I don’t think I can drink sambuca ever again. It’s like the poison version! I had to down the whole medicine bottle and my throat was burning. But I would have done that 100 times over if it done the trick. I was told it takes an hour to work, I took it at 11am and still NOTHING!

I’m worried due to all this and not having a natural BM since last year! (I’ve had some private colonics to see me through) my mega colon has become worse or internal a lot more is going on.

How do you manage your situation?

Hi Dani09,

I’m so sorry to hear your story, I know how much of a nightmare it is except I think you are worse than I am. I am seeing a consultant at the moment and seriously considering a stoma. I’m waiting for an appointment to see the stoma nurse. It’s a big step but it would solve a lot of problems for me. I really need to take iron tablets due to a blood condition but can’t and I think I would be able to, if I had the stoma, plus I could stop all the laxatives and prucalopride etc. Let me know how you get on- I’ll jerp my fingers crossed for you 😀

Thank you, my option was to have a new device which was successful previously however before when I didn’t have one I used to have bowel movements few and far between but for them to have stopped completely is concerning to both myself and the hospital. The talk of a bowel removal is also happening but first they need to think of a strategy which will clear the back log.

I need to research more about the bowel removal, I’ve seen some on here have a stoma for a year to give your bowel a break and then you can have it reversed and others don’t need that stage. I might be wrong or maybe everyone is different?

Julieleesley 68 think very carefully before having a stoma. My husband has one and hates it. You have to empty it several times a day and it can leak. It needs to be changd every 2 days. You could have iron injections instead of tablets. And who knows a cure may come along soon. If you have IBS C you will never have accidents like others, which are devastating. Good luck.

Thank you for your words of warning, I will definitely consider it very carefully before I make my decision. I have asked for iron injections but have been told they would not work for my blood problem (not sure why but will definitely ask more questions about that). To be honest, leaking, emptying and changing the bag would be much easier than the 2 hours of horrific pain i currently endure every morning. I have to get up extra early every day to allow for this painful trauma and have been hospitalised many times for it so I do think at the moment that the stoma would be a better option for me but I will attend the counselling sessions and see what else I can do to get myself as knowledgeable as possible before I decide. thank you for replying, I hope your husband finds his troubles with his soon ease.

Hi - totally understand where you are coming from as I am just the same. I find the only laxative that works for me is Picolax. Also Dulcolax syrup can be helpful. Best wishes.

Hi Dani09 I just wonder - if like me you have IBS D and if I eat sugar my inside explodes and I get diahrrea - suppose you eat some really sweet things like marshmellows, and see if anything happens. You have nothing to lose. I do feel for you.

Thank you for your message and suggestion, certainly anything is worth a try!

Unfortunately nothing seems to work at all and have never experience diarrhoea in my life.

I’m seeing a colorectal surgeon on Saturday and counting down the days as it’s a mystery to my local hospital and GP why I physically can not go to the toilet. I’ve taken everything and my stomach doesn’t like it...it sounds like thunder but nothing releases
