IBS isn't an illness in itself; if you get that particular label pinned on you, it's just a doctor telling you he/she doesn't know what's wrong. In order to arrive at that point, tests pertaining to your particular symptoms should be carried out first to eliminate known causes.
Agree with Pagan in that it's just a label as the medics do not know what is wrong and of course we all differ with our symptoms. I had a Colonoscopy and Endoscopy before I was diagnosed with IBS and that was in 1996/7.
