Hi all. I read a post about silicogel and wondered what people have experienced with this? It recommends taking 3x15mls doses daily. I wondered if anyone has tried just using it when needed and if it relieved symptoms taking it this way?
Silicogel : Hi all. I read a post about... - IBS Network
Silicogel
Hi runrig ,
I have recently stated taking an over the counter treatment for IBS called Enterosgel. It's a gel and free from preservatives and non-allergenic, works by passing through the gut removing harmful bacterial toxins and allergens that are causing the IBS symptoms. I'm into week two of taking it and have to say my bloated stomach has subsided, also no stomach cramps and diarrhoea feel quite good and confident that maybe at last I have some control.
Regards
Jilly
Hi runrig,
I have been taking Silicolgel for about 6 weeks now and would suggest taking as directed. I cannot say it is a cure but I find it has produced a general improvement with gas and D after eating a meal.
Lately , I have reduced the dosage to twice and occasionally once daily before eating and I am not sure that results are quite as good , as I have had a couple of attacks recently after dinner.
I find that it is a great help if taken about a half hour before eating a main meal. My symptoms often occur after eating and particularly if I eat a lot in the evening. I would also say that when a flare up has occurred , it has not been as bad. Usually one urgent visit to the loo and then reasonably ok.
It is a bit expensive but I get two 500ml bottles for £31 from Amazon ,postage free and think it worth it.
I honestly doubt that it would be a major help if just taken when symptoms occur, I think it needs to be taken in advance putting some sort of coating into the gut before eating.
Hope this helps.

Hi. I have bought some Sillicogel today, but on reading some of the posts, am not sure.Making you feel sick, hàs put me off, as that is one of the things I cannot stand.
I dilute mine with just a drop or two of water to make it easier for me to swallow. It has a chalky texture. You can really feel it line the digestive tract from the start. I am not good at taking anything and got used to this very quickly and the good effect outweighs any issues with taking it for me.
Hi Runrig, I have a friend who takes Fybogel and finds this good, however I decided to try LEPICOL which seems to suit me and sounds like it works in quite a different way to Sillocogel. My problem is IBSD and has been for years and decided to give Lepicol a go, despite it being psyllium husk, a fibre, after hearing a professor of digestive issues talk about the gut having a sort of memory (they do call it the second brain) and felt it was worth a go to kickstart a 'normal' response and working of peristalsis (the muscle contractions that moves food through the digestive system).
I take a teaspoon full with water before my main meal once p/d. Despite not sticking to the low Fodmap diet and now eating dairy and wheat, symptoms seem to generally be much better now for me. Also instead of avoiding some veg and fruit, wholemeal bread etc. I include them and in a way this helps too.
I still get anxious about my digestion but this seems to be improving too. Having tried lots of 'things' in the past then for me Lepicol has made a positive change to my quality of life.
If you do decide to try it then start with a low dose first as gently does it' is the best way with ibs.
Thanks. I am not good at taking anything, especially if it might make me feel sick. Thanks for saying how you take it, and its helped you.
I took 2 bottles of Silicol Gel and as first one did nothing for me i bought another needless to day it did nothing either so im taking imodium at present so far nothing still has changed with my D but im only on this a few days so im still in hope of results.
Don't know if that helps you as we are all made differently. But do hope you find something to help ive had D for the past 4 months with no let up. It's becoming part of my life I think.
