What fruits and vegetables to eat.

I am having problems with diarrhoea just now and I'm trying to discover what fruits and vegetables are best to eat for IBS. On the network site it lists more of what not to eat than what you should try. Does anyone know if there is a list anywhere of what fruits and vegetables to eat? I know which ones to avoid but I'm thinking of trying sweet potatoes which are easier to digest than potatoes but is it IBS friendly or not? What about avocado? Any help would be appreciated.

I can give you a few of what to eat.

All berries apart from blackberries, Pineapple,NO fruits that contain stones, and peel apples pears or any fruit with peel.

Bet veggies are frozen carrots, stay right away from onions garlic, sprouts,Broccoli Cabbage, you can eat white cabbage. Nothing with shells like peas sweet corn.

I know this seems a bit limited for veggies, maybe someone else can give you some ideas.

What about the fruits in low foodmap diet?? I wanna try them,i think they are good for us

I have just tried the Fodmap diet and it's made things worse but I suppose it might help for some of the good fruits and veggies.

Bananas seem to be a good fruit for me. As well as citrus fruits. But both in moderation.

Any stone fruit and I pay the price, as well as too many berries.

For vegetables I eat a lot of carrots, spinach, bok choy, celery. I'm not sure if they are all FODMAPs friendly, but they work for me (it's been a couple of years since I did the elimination diet).

Hi I'm come off the Fodmap diet now. After 3 weeks I have just gone down and down so I decided to call it a day encouraged by the dietitian who Prof Nick Read sent my email to. So I'm back on the 'normal' IBS diet and I'm going to try very cautiously to add things to my very limited foods just now. I was wondering about Avocado's do you know if they're ok or not?

Thanks for your reply, I do appreciate all the help I'm getting from people on this forum. I'd be lost without it.

Can't comment on avocados. I developed an allergy like response to it over the years so I haven't had one in a decade :( The best bet is to experiment. You'll get better and better at knowing what you can consume. A food diary really helps.

Sorry linden don't know what happened there but the post below was meant for you.

I'm like you linden,I done the Fodmap diet religiously for 8wks,and I felt really unwell. So I do think it's down to the individual what works for one won't work for another. I think some rules go for most of us,like stay away from onions, garlic,Batter. If it's IBS-D your probably best away from fruit, apart from Banana. Another tip I've found out is,drink water all day keep a glass beside you when your sitting, and squeeze some fresh lemon juice in it,and keep topping it up. You may think like I did oh citrus, but when lemon hits your mouth the citrus goes.

I suffer with Emphesema so I can do without chest infections and colds, but due to other health issues as well as IBS,my food intake and medications deplete my body of vitamins, nutrient ect ect and brings down the immune system. I was hostpitalized 7yrs ago,my family thought they had lost me,with a serious chest infection.

Since then I've done this with lemon, and I haven't even had a cold in 7yrs. You google Lemons and you'll see how much they can help you.

Sorry for the long post, but it was the only way I could

Let you know how important lemons are.

hi.. I do eat apples but steamed and then taking off the skin. I also try avocado, it works fine for me. Apart from fruits, in vegetables I try cucumber, zuchini, sweet potatoes. I cook all vegetables with lentils and rice. It works for me well. I also take 1 tbsp fennel powder after every meal (3 times a day), it helps with releasing gas and acid reflux.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that, it does help

I think it's very difficult to give a definitive list as IBS is such an individual disease and people will be affected by different things

It will probably just be trial and error to find out what suits you

I can eat mostfruit in very small quantities but I can't have dairy in any form

As said varies from person to person plus you state of health/play as find if tired makes things worse than if more full of beans

Salad can make me cover the 100 meters quicker than sprinter with a rocket up there jacksie but others times ok.

Had things like fish n chips place use is really good thought a treat as hadn't had much and xmas eve was as rougher than Atlantic in a 12! where many other times been fine plus don't forget alot of IBS is down to enzymes/bacteria's/hormones and it is downstream of everything else so can be more whats going on up stream than in bowel that causes it

Thanks for the information but I have just stopped the Fodmap diet because it didn't agree with me and my symptoms have got a lot worse so I understand what you're saying that it's a jump off point but I'm looking for fruit and veg advice for IBS not Fodmap.

Like you say it's trial and error but I want to stick to trying things that are OK for IBS in general rather than what causes problems for most IBS sufferers. Just desperate to find something that doesn't cause me massive problems.

That's brilliant, thanks very much I appreciate it. Do you know about avocado at all? Do you mean squash the fruit or like cordial?

Interesting how we are all different. Beets is an instant trip to the loo for me.

bell peppers, onions, cabbage, garlic, broccoli all set me off and too many berries.

well cooked carrots, peas, blueberries, bananas, apples and pears I can tolerate well. I can tolerate berries in small doses.
