Hi there. My husband is a sufferer and has been for about 30 years. He's 46 . He has seen a ad in newspaper for Silicogel. Has anyone heard of this and does it work

I would be very sceptical about a product advertised in the papers.

Before taking anything I would suggest that you speak to your GP

Yes I've tried Silicol Gel, its quite expensive and tastes gritty. Although it feels soothing when taken I find it is very constipating which I am normally so doesn't help me in that way.

I haven,t tried it, but think Holland and batrett sell it, so you could ask the staff.

Yes I have tried it. It seemed to work quite well- you have to work at getting the dose right. You can buy it at Holland & Barrat- just look out for one of their special offers - there are numerous offer variations.( sign up for emails !)

I don't take it so much now as I am on Questran- prescribed. It seems I have bile acid malabsorption problems ( gall bladder removed 12 years ago, IBS for 40 + years), so I have to take this daily for ever....probably.

Also you could try cutting out Gluten-see if that helps ,also cut down on lactose that helped me. You have to try one change at a time & keep a diary..... tedious- but it might help in the long run. It is worth it - you are still young!

Good Luck!

Hi Hestia88, I had my Gall Blader out about 10yrs ago, and since then I've suffered chronic IBS. I was just interested in you taking Questran since. I was just wondering if you have IBS, and if so does it help. I'm getting pretty desperate now, so any info you have I would be grateful for. Take Care

Hi Gemini71

Yes I have had IBS since I was about 17. As I said gall bladder missing but what made everything go completely pear shaped was a very bad stomach bug 3 years ago. I then had more or less permanent diarrhea.

Saw a Gastroenterologist - had the various unpleasant tests... the summary was 'bile acid malabsorption' also did a York Intolerance Test ( high yeast intolerance suggested) also saw a Nutritionist & a Dietacian. Summary of these was to try giving up yeast, then gluten, then lactose. The Questran powder - I take one per evening helped but so did adjusting my diet. I had already stopped eating quite a few foodstuffs so am on a very limited diet. Still I can 'go out & about' most days so it is worth it!

If I can help any further, let me know! Good Luck...

Hi,Hestia88, thanks for your reply, I've been through all what you mentioned, at the moment I'm waiting for Hypnotherapy. Did you have much faith in the York intolerance test? I've tried cutting out all what they suggested, also been on the Fodmap diet, also travelled all over the country seeing Gastrologist. But nothing seems to have any effect. I have often thought about an intolerance test but I was told there not very reliable, it's not the money it's just expensive if it's a waste of time.

Yes I tried it . I had mine from Amazon ,I took it for a week and I felt really unwell, I was going to the toilet 5/6 times a day, but my problem is the more I go the worse I feel. But I also don't think one shoe fits all. Trouble is it's expensive finding out what suits you all the time. Take care

First time posting in here, Iv had Ibs ever since gall bladder removal quiet a few years ago gets more severe every time, just tried Silicolgel gel but it just made me more constipated, I'm usually just bloated with running to toilet all the time, but every few years I get the more pain prominent Ibs which is the worst pain ever, with pain in upper stomach under ribs like there is a big ballon of gas in there that just won't move every day, then alters to lower stomach, going for another scan on Monday as pain is terrible,
