Has anyone had any relief from doing the FODMAP diet.

I tried it for 2 weeks and found no difference, should I have tried it for longer? I would be glad for any feedback on this. Maybe I just do not have any willpower

Hi kavanagh 1955,

Loads of people on here, including me, have had great success with this diet, but it doesn't work for everybody. However, you do have to do it properly to make it work. I was so ill before I started on it 9 months ago that it didn't take much willpower to persuade me to stick with it. I got a very quick result, but it can take a few weeks and much fiddling around for some people.

Are you D or C predominant and where did you get your FODMAPs info from?

I am IBS-D and I bought the Patsy Catsos book.

Well, you've got the right book - my own copy is very dog-eared through a great deal of use. I also downloaded the app from Monash which has a great traffic-light guide for when you're shopping or eating out.

Do give the diet a thorough go and keep to the first stage for at least 3 weeks before you start trying to reintroduce stuff. Like me, you may also find that there are foods listed as 'safe' on FODMAPs which weren't safe at all for me, e.g. oats, rice, blueberries, bananas and a few more besides - took me a while to work those out. Keeping a detailed food diary will help.

As you're a D type, you might also ask your GP for a trial of colestyramine, it's an amazing treatment which stops bile acid rushing through your system too fast instead of staying around to digest your food as it should. I've been taking it for about 4 weeks now and have only just got the dosage absolutely right (a quarter of a sachet once a day, 20 minutes before lunch). It was an instant result and is apparently successful for over 50% of people with IBS-D. I can now eat an almost normal diet.

Yes I have. Are you under the supervision of a FODMAP trained dietitians. Here is a list of those based in the UK kcl.ac.uk/medicine/research... I have IBS-C.

Me too. It's been fab.

You do need to keep a food diary though so that you can pinpoint when you have symptoms and what you ate before.

Maybe by Paleo or SCD will work better for you?

Only been on it a week and noticed a big improvement. Only downside for me is i have gone from ibs-d to being constipated.

Definitely worth persevering with. Some fodmap safe foods could actually be causing you to still experience problems.
