Methenamine

Uribel is a brand name for a medication that contains methenamine hippurate as its active ingredient. Based on the research available, methenamine hippurate appears to be a moderately efficient treatment for interstitial cystitis (IC).

She went through my notes from my last referral and found a letter from December 2022 recommending that my previous GP prescribe a drug known as Hiprex (Methenamine hippurate). I did not get a copy of this letter, nor did my previous (and pretty useless) GP tell me about it.

My consultant urologist tells me hiprex is our fall-back treatment re the way we're managing the chronic issues involved in my various chronic urological/renal conditions. So my dr then has put me onto a trial medication of METHENAMINE HIPPURATE 1gm per day (it should be 2g per day but I cannot tolerate it). This neutralises any acidity in my bladder to stop me getting pains.
