SS affects the upper layers of the skin. Subcutaneous SS is a variant of SS where the subcutaneous tissue, the fatty tissue under the two upper layers of the skin, becomes inflamed. In some people with subcutaneous SS, both the upper layers and fatty tissue are affected at the same time.
