Knee replacdment coming 4/4/19

I was hoping with all my healthy lifestyle improvements to escape the knife! Last summer/ fall my knee was great then cold winter came and Boom. Ive been going for therapy and the physical therapist said I needed to see orthopedic surgeon, so I did. He explained that with my " knee deformity" so severe( knocked knee or valgus), my bones are not only rubbing against each other but its causing my femur to turn, which is affecting my hip. Surgery is the only fix. The good part was he was impressed with my wt loss, strength in my legs, etc so my hard work should help my recovery. Im a big chicken so will try not to stress my self out waiting for the event. My goal while I wait is to keep doing my exercises and drop a few more pounds.

Hi Hoski, that is big news for you so sending best wishes. I'm sure the experts in the community will agree that all your hard work on making sure you have lots of movement in your daily routine will prepare you well for knee surgery. Please do share any and all insights and experiences you have that you think would benefit others on here! Very best :-)

Hi there. Similar to you, I lead a very healthy lifestyle but this year I will need to have a hip replacement due to osteoarthritis. I have dropped 40 lbs of excess weight and I'm strengthening my muscles with exercise. I feel confident that I will have a whole new lease on life post-op. It's so important that we do our part so that the surgeons can do their part. Our health is about personal responsibility, not about going to the doctor for a quick fix. Good luck with your knee surgery. Sheila

Thankyou so much! I still have another 40 to go but I am thankful my doc sent me to therapy. Im having trouble getting out of low chairs and they explained it is because my core muscles are weak. I was blaming it on my knee! So now I have new exercises to do plus my exercise bike. I cannot wait to be able to walk down our long countey road again.

My Husband had it done and says it is the best decision he made, he said he is pain free for the first time in 10 years and the knee now bends, he said the most important thing is doing the exercises afterwards even if it hurts, people heal faster and knee works better. I have heard this from others as well, May you have great success with your knee, Blessings

That is so good to hear! Im afraid of the surgery( mostly because Im a retired nurse=bad patient), but I do believe it is necessary and my life will be better. I guess the pain is not unlike childbirth... I will get thru it😂

praying for you to have a speedy recovery. Did the doctor say how long the recovery will be?

in reply to wrightfan

Thankyou for your prayers! They talked recovery in stages, because its my rt knee, no driving for prob 6 wk, if it were left then 3 wk. Im retired but if I had a desk job, retun in 4 wk, if heavy labor job 6 wk or more. They said I probably can b back on my horse in 3 mo( easy riding) but complete recovery up to a year. They stressed the compliance with exercise program mostly.
