Hi, 12 weeks ago I injured my knee, I have a large bucket handle tear of my meniscus, the loose bit of cartridge has been trapped up inside the joint and I've not been able to fully bend or straighten my knee or walk properly on it since it happened. It's been horribly painful.
I have been told by both my work place physio and at an MCAS assessment that it's going to need an operation to put it right. I have my first appointment with the consultant on Monday, a short notice one, since he only received and read my referral on Friday - so I'm a bit concerned that it happened so fast, makes me wonder what the physio put in her report to make him need to see me asap. Not that I'm complaining!
Anyway, the point of my post, what questions do I need to ask to get the best out of my appointment? Has anyone here been through the same thing?

I would ask if there is an alternative to surgery. For me, surgery is a final step. Then I would want to know the success rate of the type of surgery you might need; the recovery time for most patients; and the chance that further surgery won't be needed.
Thanks Mickey. The appointment went well, I got emergency X-rays and an MRI done, and saw the scan pictures later that same afternoon. My knee is locked by a piece of torn cartilage jammed up between the bones, and will not resolve on it's own. There are no other alternatives to surgery at this point. My operation is this afternoon as surgeon said any further delay was going to cause even more damage.
I am sorry to hear about your injury.....and yes the only treatment assuming you have a displaced meniscal tear is surgery. but the surgery is short and same day. Just a couple small incisions to insert small instruments into the knee joint and trim back the torn meniscus. The procedure is called knee arthroscopy---you can google it. Best to you. You will do great!
