Drops for dry eyes

Has anyone found effective drops for dry eyes? I've tried most over the counter ones as well as one recommended by the optician and one prescribed by the ophthalmologist. None have been really successful. One eye feels constantly uncomfortable. I've tried to find out if it is a different problem but everyone insists it's dry eyes.

Hi Bearman,

I have been using use hypremellose for dry eyes for several years, my doctor told me that using a computer screen a lot was causing the eyes to dry out. Also I was working in an air conditioned office at the time which was another factor.

These drops really help and I get them on prescription, they may be available over the counter and are quite inexpensive.

I added a link for you to have a look at:

Hope the advice helps.😅

I tried many brands and found that I could not tolerate the drops containing hyalauric acid which had been prescribed for me. The best ones for me are called Systane Ultra and are preservative free. They are not cheap and are not prescribed, but they are effective for some hours. I then use Viscotears ointment at night.

When my dry eyes started I was referred by my rheumatologist to the eye clinic and had punctal plugs inserted into my tear ducts to stop tears draining away and help build up the tear film. My eyes still get uncomfortable later in the evening but I no longer have constant irritation.

The Butterflies Eyecare website has a huge range of products, including eye masks that you can heat up in the microwave. Best of luck!

Hi Bearman,

I think I have tried almost every preparation on the market, nothing worked and most made my eyes sting or bunged them up. In desperation my rheumatologist prescribed Celluvisc, those in conjunction with Optrex eye wash work a treat. They come in single use phials and are easy to take out with you and use during the day. Definitely worth givng them a try and see if they work for you. All the best

I'm allergic too, to many of the prescribed eye drops. Currently prescribed liquifilm preservative free which are great.

I have Sjögren’s and I find that Hyloforte preservative free drops with Vit A pos or HyraMed night ointment at night work well. I also have punctal plugs in my tear ducts and a humidifier in my room. The final must for my dry eye disease is using a heated eye mask for 15 minutes daily and then massaging the lids together afterwards to help the meibomean glands to produce more oil. This combination has prevented any damage occurring to the surface of my eyes although they are still very dry.
