Behavior Sleep Disorder

Hello,

I have been diagnosed with this sleep disorder, where I physically act out my dreams. It only happens occasionally, but I end up out of bed on the hardwood floor. Once I fractured my sternum and other times hurt various body parts. Has anyone had this as well, and if so, how did you manage it? I am considering adding a long pillow to the floor, rugs maybe. Any ideas? I am 68 years old and could get really hurt.

Hi KitKat1954,

I get out of bed and act out dreams and also do bizarre, things, for eg, squeezing toothpaste in my hair, taking my Sky viewing card out of the box, getting milk out of the fridge and leaving it on the side and leaving the door open, hiding mugs, plates, moving items etc, I don't think I'm dreaming about doing that but the bottom line is keeping yourself safe! Do you have someone else in the house that could gently put you back to bed? If not (like me), then it gets a bit real doesn't it. I have also injured myself on walkabout but not known about it until I wake up the next day weirdly.

The main thing I do is to keep my bedroom door shut, any extra barrier is good but try to keep it gentle to mitigate injury. I also have a door guard, it's a net one and more gentle than a stair gate as you could injure yourself on that alone.

I did go extreme once and got a piece of foam, embedded drawing pins in it and taped it to my front door handle so it would stop me (in theory) if I went out the front door. I tried to leap out of the window once so I now have my dressing table in the way to make it difficult to do that.

Whatever you decide, just think if it will keep you safe, wake you up or potentially injure you further but your idea of a long pillow and/or rugs sounds a very good one!!

Good luck, keep yourself safe!

All the best.
