Sleep disorder

Hi all

I am new to this forum.

I am posting on my ongoing, although not a constant sleep disorder.

Basically I can fall asleep at night but I can wake from anywhere between 2 to 4 hours and when that occurs I am unable to back to sleep.

It has in the past been diagnosed as sleep anxiety, as I rarely have any issues in the day but I do know if busy at work that does lead to the sleeplessness. I was say 3yrs back diagnosed Citilopram at first helped, but the 2nd time of taking it actually made my sleep worse.

I can be sound asleep and then it’s like a light bulb moment suddenly wide awake, and times will be quite hot of which is not to do with what I wear (boxers only) and not heavy bedding.

If I sit up and relax the hear just goes from my body, but if I lie back down to try and sleep quickly overwhelmed by heat in my body, it’s just seems my brain will not accept sleep, and I have tried all sorts.

Thinking of now taking Melatonin but not a clue if this would work or what dosage.

I am a 60yr old male and some would say very fit for my age, so any advice greatly appreciated to try and get some order back in my life sleep wise.

Hi, Sounds how I was until someone on the sister site for AF suggested I should get tested for Sleep Apnea and sure enough I did have it and was put on a CPAP machine and now all is under control. I was not overweight and not a usual suspect for SA but I was having 68 episodes an hour so well worth checking. Good Luck.

It is worth considering your levels of potassium and iodine and magnesium.. these seem toi affect the body;s ability to regulate heat, as well as stress. You can do a patch test for iodine - it is good enough to give you a guide. Most of us are low in magnesium - it is low in our soils. If you supplement avoid the oxide - we don't absorb it well. Most of us are OK with mag citrate. And for potassium, veg and more veg... I hope that you crack the problem

As above check vitamins. Less absorption after age 50.

Also check hormones ( males have them too) and for Thyroid antibibodies ( not done on NHS) and full thyroid panel ( done on NHS. If your TSH is over 2.5 you have an issue. Good luck x
