Hi
I am 55 years old with Sjogren’s Syndrome. I am losing my hair rapidly due to hair breakage and limited regrown. I am desperate for any suggestions to reduce breakage of my hair and encourage new hair growth. Many thanks Caz.

Hi Caz,
I have dealt with very noticeable thin hair and thinning on top for several years. My hair completely stopped growing. Now my hair is getting longer and it’s started to really thicken up and starting to look normal again!
I have done three things. 1. I have reduced my stress levels as stress can be a cause of losing hair. 2. I have been taking vitamin D3 the last 6 months or so. Most people are lacking in vitamin d due to lack of sun and if you look up the vitamin d council and vitamin d in general you will be surprised at just how many health conditions it relates to. 3. Your body follows your mind. I have an interest in hypnotherapy and the subconcious mind. This might sound crazy but since your subconcious mind which regulates your body believes anything you tell it, right or wrong. Everytime, I looked in the mirror, I’d be like wow my hair is getting thicker, it’s looking great. I am still doing it. I have also been using coconut shampoo and conditioner as coconut is supposed to help with health growth. I was also considering using some rosemary oil which is also supposed to stimulate health growth, but I don’t need it now. I hope this helps.
Thyroid imbalance can be related to hair loss.
I bought my daughter Nioxin, all her hair fell out when my grandson committed suicide, this helped it grow back within six weeks.Get your thyroid checked also.Hope this helps.
I am 58 years old with Sjogren's as well. I have had the rapid hair loss issue as well. Finally found my issue with genetic blood tests. I have the genetic issue of not absorbing folic acid or B12. My Dr. started me on more B12 and folate-folic acid and I have no hair loss now
and my hair has thickened back. I had tried biotin, more Vit D and other vitamins and nothing had worked for me.
Hello Caz, i can completely sympathise with you and other members 😔 my hair was thick and long down my back and woke one morning to a very bad bald patch by my right ear, so i had hubby cut it shorter and he found 3 bald patches on top of my head, so that did it for me i skinned my head and been doing that since 2yrs after being diagnosed in 2008 and i'm 51.

Hi Caz, besides the helpful responses others put in; a number of health issues including medications can cause hair fall, extreme shedding, etc. Your doctor and dermatologist should beable to help pin point that part. Stress reduction is a big factor in helping prevent further damage, stress can be good and bad events in life, new home ,new birth, death, new symptoms of health issues on and on. We can't escape it but we do have control of what we allow; toxic people, social media, news etc. Now on to what can you do, depending on your sensitivities allergies etc this may or may not be helpful. I noticed considerable hair fall to the point of I might have 1/4 the density of hair I used to have, I think they call it level three hair loss (Im 39)... options; wigs and hair helpers, extentions. Wigs are fun, no shame in using them. Now for what goes on underneath it. There are tons of info online about scalp care and hair care. Something that seems to be helping me look less like I stuck my finger in a socket and fried my hair... once a week I use aloe vera juice and witch hazel and vitamin E oil mixed the best I can and apply to my scalp and hair (messy messy use in shower or some where you can easily clean up any spill, drips etc) massage in my scalp a few minute (2-3) Gently, like lightly dont press on scalp. Rinse with room temp or cold if you can tolerate. Next condition as you would a regular shampoo condition. Air dry. If your scalp feels too tight or dry after this or the next day, wet hair, drenched. gently dab off dripping excess so youre not dripping water every where. Take a deep conditioner or your regular condition plus a teaspoon to a table spoon of oil (look up curly girl methods or hair oils hair types and individuals determine oil types) assuming we need light - argon, vitamin E, theres lists online for heavy and light oils. Mix that oil with about twice as much as needed for regular conditioning - I have jaw length hair and use maybe 4 tbsp worth conditioner when doing this, vs 1-2 tbsp normally. start with ends and slowly gently work toward scalp and massage over scalp. cover hair with shower cap. let sit for 10-max of 30 minutes. Rinse it out. If your hair sticks together the oil was not right for you try a different one next time. In the mean time if that happens shampoo any stickyness out and condition as normal. if it was not sticky after rinsing deep condition mix out, congrats dab excess dripping water let your hair air dry. Your scalp should feel moist and refreshed. This has really helped slow and some days have no hair fall. Ans not feel horribly itchy or pain in scalp. Hopefully it helps, we dont always think about moisturizing our scalp like the rest of our skin but we need to. Have a blessed day.
Thanks everyone for all thoughtful and informative responses. I have used a combination of everyone’s responses. I have new fluffy hair coming through as well as some longer strands about 5cm in length. Fingers crossed they will keep growing
Hi Caz, I suffered thinning hair for the last 9 years, I am now 49. It started when my health took a turn for the worst (undiagnosed Crohn's Disease followed by Sjogren's Syndrome). I ended up on a course of steroids for many months, then I started taking Hydroxychloroquine for about 5 years. I stopped Hydroxy about 2 years ago and since then my hair has started to grow back normally. I think it boils down to a combination of state of health, stress, diet and medication. I hope you can get to the bottom of it.
