GUM SHIELD life saver! Dry mouth

Hi all

Hope this hack helps someone!

I’ve been looking through posts for a permanent solution to my dry mouth. I noticed I haven’t come across any posts about gum shields so I thought I’d create a new post. I use a gum shield to help stimulate saliva.

The gum shield helps stimulate saliva I use one at night when I’m sleeping. Lately my symptoms are so bad I’ve been using one all the time which isn’t ideal but in the absence of anything else it’s a short term fix if nothing else. I buy the clear ones so they're not that noticeable if I'm using them during the day.

You can buy them on Amazon for a few pounds. You mould them to your teeth after dipping them in hot water, if you’re careful you can get a really tight fit which makes them more comfortable to wear. They definitely work and are ideal for sleeping because they stimulate saliva and keep your mouth moist when you’re asleep. I either wear one on my top teeth or my bottom teeth because you can get sore gums if you’re wearing them a lot so alternating stops your mouth getting sore. At the moment I’m using one top and bottom for sleeping because my mouths so bad and I can’t find a permanent solution. Hope this idea helps someone 😀

Hi rosserk,

Interesting! I’m wondering what is the mechanism which makes this mouth shield effective? What makes it any different to any regular mouth guard?

Also what is the mouth guard made of? I’d want to know its toxicity potential seeing that it’s in the mouth for hours at a time.

Kind regards,

Megan

The mouth guards are perfectly suitable material to leave in your mouth for hours at a time. They are often advised by dentists for people to wear when they sleep to prevent teeth grinding. Not sure about the mechanics of why they work to stimulate saliva but they 100% do. They are extremely cheap so worth a try for people who are really struggling to find a solution.

Kindest regards 😊

Hi Diane

Just go for the cheapest clear ones. I tried to paste an amazon link but for some reason I couldn’t get it to work. You also can’t post pictures easily on here but try the following link to see the type I mean then look for it on amazon. I’m actually able to wear my gum shield without anyone really noticing they do eventually stain and discolour but cheap enough to keep replacing. Don’t spend more than a couple of dollars! I pay around 4 pound for 4 here in the UK. Good luck 😀
