Giggle Incontinence

Hi I want to share my story of living with Giggle Incontinence in order to help people who are living or have lived with similar issues. I also hope to help those who know someone who is going through something similar. From ages 9-18 I suffered from Giggle Incontinence. I would get uncontrollable laughter and be unable to stop urine from coming out of me. There was no way to prevent it as it would just happen with no warning.

I went to the doctor for it at age 10 and got medication. I can't remember what it was, but I think it helped. After a year or so, my parents and I thought I had outgrown my problem, so I stopped taking the medication. But the Giggle Incontinence came back full force when I was 12-13. I went back to the doctor, but I don't remember what they did about it.

After that, I would occasionally have episodes. I never wore diapers but I would wear menstrual pads when going into a situation that seemed like there was a greater risk of it happening. For example, my cousin's house.

The last time I remember it happening was at age 18 when I was trying to give a presentation in Spanish for my Spanish class. I was so nervous that I giggled and couldn't hold my urine. Like all the other times this has happened, I tried to cover it up and hope no one would notice. Thankfully I have not had an episode since then, but I hope my experience can help people to not feel alone. I felt alone when I was a kid suffering from this.

Thank you for sharing this with us! It had to be very difficult experiencing this as a child and young adult.

I am wondering if anyone ever suggested strengthening exercises for your pelvic floor. If it ever does return, I would suggest seeking out a urogynecologist or a physical therapist who is specifically trained to help with pelvic floor dysfunction to see if strengthening the pelvic floor muscles would help you. But let's hope that it doesn't return!
