Do i have sickle cell or am im just a carrier
Sickle Cell Trait is the carrier. It he doesn’t have the trait, then most likely, you do. They didn’t start automatic testing on newborns until 1989 so if you were born prior to that, they would’ve had no reason to test you and it would remain unknown.
It both you and your husband had the trait, your child would have a 25% chance of having sickle cell disease. Thank God she only has the trait. Hope this helps.
Hi Cait, I am sorry that your daughter is a Carrier, can I ask you a question, was your husband tested prior to the birth of the child, and were do you live. As this is very important- I ask this question there is no doubt in my mind that your husband is carrier. To inherit this disease both parent must be carriers. The lineage goes as follows both parent with AS will either have sickle cell trait or full blown sickle cell aneamia child, or evidently the child will normal which is AA.
Every parent due to have a child in the UK or the USA are subjected to a screening to ensure that the correct prodecure are followed.
Now it being known for parent (husband ) to be in denial of sickle being in the the family. Africans will always say it does not run in my family - please let me know what you think. Take care . I hope it’s explanatory and I hope you understand , you need to get to the bottom of this.
Agree. Sickle cell trait and sickle cell carrier mean the same thing. Generally it causes no negative effects on your life. One or both of you will be a carrier and you've got to this point without knowing. It really only matters if you both are and are planning to have more children because then there is a 25% chance of the child having full sickle cell disease.
You can ask your doctor to test you both. It's a simple blood test.
