I have went to the hospital for a check up on my sickle cell and was asked if I would consider taking antibiotics every day. I'm a little wary of taking these everyday if I don't have any infection.
Any info and comments greatly appreciated.

I take penicillin and folic acid daily. I don't like taking it at all and I take 'breaks' from it as I believe that long term use isn't necessarily a good thing - your body gets used to it and it isn't as effective.
My stepdaughter has sc. I see some of you are taking penicillin. I know that has damaging side effect with long term use. I'm wonder has anyone tried natural antibiotics? Im praying for you all. I truly hate this disease.
You should discus that with your heamatologist. There is no consensus in the medical community about this. I have SCD since birth, was diagnosed at 18 months and took a quarterly injection of Penicillin until adulthood. A review of the best practices introduced a change and I only take antibiotics when necessary, i.e. like anyone else in the presence of an infection so that the antibiotics are effective when needed and you don't get used to them.
