Simple Tips to Follow If You are Caught in the Rains.

As a general rule, maintaining a healthy eating habit keeps our immune systems strong. Nevertheless, these quick tips will be of great help if one is caught in the rains or snow or just about any cold weather situation.

1. Quickly get into warm clothes when you reach home especially if you were drained.

2. Make for yourself or child a big mug of some warm drink (I prefer milk).

3. Take a mild pain killer especially if in addition to the rains, the wind was strong. The cold has sipped into your body and can only be felt if you experience crisis later. Taking a warm drink and mild pain killer helps to stop or minimize a full blown crisis.

4. Get under a blanket or anything that keeps you warm.

These simple steps will help sickle cell warriors avoid or have less crises during cold periods.

Hi Great advice thanks for sharing. I have a few questions. What things help you avoid crisis? How long are you outside in cold? What are your go to things that help you while having crisis?

ok with sickle cell how long to be outside? this question varies we don't even know how long but any little time in the cold could play a factor in crisis.

avoiding crisis in general stay hydrated, take folic acid supplement, stay dry in the rain. dress accordingly with the weather, beware of snow cold is not our friend.

primary care dr or hematologist visit, er visit, heating pad, pain meds, comfy bed and phone and gallons of room temp water. phone in case of emergency and to call out of work.

We cannot live like hermits because we have sickle cell disorder. This also goes to, say we cannot completely avoid the elements. No matter how long one decides to stay outdoors, the important thing is to take precautionary steps so that you don't fall sick while enjoying the outdoors. That's basically what I tried to say here, focusing on being caught in the rains or cold.

great advice i have sickle cell anemia type ss and every fall winter and winter spring I have to do exactly this keeping warm and staying hydrated is critical for us so even if your not feeling full sickle crisis pain take the pain killer cause you know that pain will be back to creep up and throw you in to crisis.
