Turmeric

I have heard turmeric is good in fighting our cancer. I use the powder and sprinkle in salads or pasta. Does anyone take the turmeric pills as a supplement? I might prefer that unless has heard to avoid it.

Hi KitMios! First, just want to say that I like your thoughts re: doing things that might tip the scales in your favor, even a bit! Won't hurt, might help = Why not? (my onc taught me this! :) ).

From what I gather (not a scientist), turmeric could be beneficial...again, probably in a small way, but small contributions add up to potentially tilt the scales?

So I bought and currently *own* capsules of turmeric, but I have to confess that I rarely take them...although I think I should...I just have a small fistful of pills I already take, so am averse?

But, if you have no issues with taking turmeric, my uneducated opinion is that you should. Why not? :) Nothing but the potential for good!

Take care,

Lynn

Turmeric is a contraindication for many cancer drugs. Be careful

Yes I also read this about turmeric and my meds and I stopped taking it.

I have never read that any where. Can you tell me? Taken with querctin it’s been found to fight some tumors growth. I will find the article and post this , where I found it.

I think it’s so important to empower ourselves with information and options that help our bodies heal and perform more optimally ~ it’s great to see you are harnessing this skill

So tumeric has an active ingredient curcumin which as a phytonutrient has been demonstrated to have good benefits to help us live better with our diagnosis

It is not very bioavailable ie we have to consume a LOT to get the benefit. It is better activated when consumed with black pepper as the piperade in the pepper helps us absorb it better

That said to really get it at high therapeutic doses I actually take a liposomal version of curcumin - best one I have found is from MCS Formulas. The company was set up by Daniel who is a scientist whose life has also been touched by cancer (his wife had breast cancer) so the formulas are well researched and don’t contain any cheap binders and fillers

I take turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties because of the aches and pains caused by the hormone treatment. As others have said you need to check for contra indications against all of the drugs you are taking. Also lots of brands available but I understand it works better with black pepper included. Mine has turmeric, black pepper and ginger and no other additives apart from the natural cellulose the capsules are made from.

Thank you. I’ll ask my oncologist this week about turmeric. I have so many joint pains from drug and also bad knees. Maybe this will help.

Hi KitMios, my oncologist is fine with my taking fresh turmeric root and powdered. I use with fresh ginger, pepper and a bit of oil in smoothies.

I also have turmeric massages with oil I've bought from HealthXtracts in the UK.

I use turmeric in my daily juice (alongside many supplements) but was told by the pharmacology team not to use it in powdered form (which has less benefits anyway!) so might be worth checking with your team.

Hi KitMios! Years ago my GP asked me to include tumeric tea and organic spice to my diet but to avoid the capsules. The thought at the time was that the levels found in the capsules were inconsistent and of dubious origin, and the mass quantity was not well absorbed by the body. I have no idea if this is still true, but I do love my tumeric tea and yes, it does help my aches and pains and reduces inflamation.

This is helpful. I might just stick to the tea and spice. But I will also ask my oncologist

I used to take the capsules and I did feel they helped keep joint aches at bay when I was on letrozole (I think!). It takes 1-2 months for the effects to be effective and you must take it consistently. Bighugs21 above wrote some great tips.

Having said all that - please make sure to check the details for each drug you take. (Read all that fine print for contraindications)

There are some breast cancer drugs that the tumeric will lessen their effect and it is not recommended then.

I have been taking DōTERRA dual capsules, turmeric, my onc said it was a great anti inflammatory, and did not interfere with any medications. I’ve seen some studies that say its been shown to fight cancer!(iam on ibrance &anastrozole-3years)

I was taking it for joint pain then I had a big PE and was put on Eliquis probably forever and I read that Turmeric can interfere with anticoagulant therapy so I stopped it.

After completion of treatment for my original breast cancer diagnosis in 2017 and on the advice of a registered dietician I incorporated Tumeric Tea and the spice with black pepper into my diet. My cancer reoccurred in October 2021. I still drink the tea and use the spice. Liver Mets only. Some joint pain due to Letrozole. Hopefully the Tumeric helps but I don’t really know.

I take turmeric along with mushrooms, both are probably good to fight cancer, in some way.

Sending hugs........

I was hoping to take turmeric for its various benefits but my oncologist reviewed it (along with my list of other desired supplements) with the pharmacologist and she told me not to take it due to contraindications w the cancer meds I was taking (Ibrance, Exemestane, Exgeva). She ok’d fish oil and glucosamine chondroitin for joints. The only other supplement on my list she warned me against was milk thistle because it could effect liver function where my met cancer cells had migrated to. It was very valuable to receive specific input from the pharmacologist so you may want to ask about your particular situation first.

My ortho knee MD said to NOT take turmeric! Not good for older women--let's say over 65? Somehow causes cardiac problems. I can't remember the details due to drug-brain!! Ha-ha! Let's find a supplement for our memories! Kay

Hi KitMios,

I do occasionally take turmeric powder mixed into hot tea and sometimes into hot plant milk with some honey or monk sugar or other type of sweetener. My health is doing quite well and so I think it might be helping a little bit. Keep doing it.

I used to take curcumin/turmeric because of the benefits for us w mbc, but had to stop when i learned that it interferes w my Verzenio metabolism. Learned about it from studies found on the internet. Drugs that work via the CYP3A pathway (at least) are affected.
