Travel insurance with MBC

Hello, I was recently diagnosed with MBC to the spine and chest lymph after being clear for 10 years! I really want a trip in the sun but cannot find travel insurance in the UK. Does this even exist or are we destined to never getting on a plane again☹️

I have not attempted yet to get travel insurance but I'm told the following are worth looking at: payingtoomuch.com; insurancewith.com or covered2go.co.uk. You can also get a GHIC which, post Brexit, replaced the EHIC but it's not clear what, if any, benefits that confers. See nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/health.... Good luck!

Hi. We found the cover for cancer just made it stupidly expensive so we just omit the cancer cover. This means if Susies condition stopped is travelling, it would not be covered but covered for everything else. Don't let insurance stop you from travelling!

Thank you for the tips.

Hi, do you mean just leave out the cancer part and be covered for lost luggage etc? I do not feel unwell at all (thank God) and it’s so unfair that due to MBC I am not insurable !

Yes, that's it, Just insure without mentioning it. It's then in place for luggage ect, just probably won't cover cancer related issues. It's a gamble but we have bigger fish to fry eh? 😀❤️xxx

Absolutely 👍🏾

Absolutely right. We took out the cheapest without mentioning anything. If you feel well and are not bothered about the Cancer Cover then do it. That’s just our opinion though. Some ladies/gents may say otherwise.

Exactly what I do. I am in NY and went to Egypt and Puerto Rico this summer. I decided that if I am going to fight to live then I want to LIVE! Just be super careful. Mask as much as possible etc. I had coverage and did not mention that I have cancer and thankfully all went fine. Unfortunately I caught Covid for the first time while in Puerto Rico but thankfully it was mild. Didn't even know till I got back. All that to say is enjoy your life. We are told our lives are shortened and if we are taking all these toxic meds to prolong it, we might as well make beautiful memories instead of staring at the four walls forever.

It's not easy, you do get refused, but I eventually got insurance with Allclear. They were kind and helpful. It seems though that we all have different experiences. Mine was very expensive for a week, so I went back and changed it for an annual policy, for a bit extra, so I didn't have to go through the experience for every trip. I thought it would also stir me into taking a few trips! Good luck.. x

Hi I am looking for the same. I did insurance myself pre pandemic - so need to hunt that policy back out. Look at cancer U.K. and MacMillan as they suggest insurers. I am off to Spain this summer after so long. :) x

We went to the sunny south and I got travel insurance that covered me for everything except my cancer. A lot of companies when they hear metastatic cancer will not cover you at all. I called a lot of different ones before a frien suggested the one I used.

Hi BritSammy, I'm over 70 with MBC and have got insured twice with GoodtoGo. It's not cheap!! But at this point, travel is really important for me psychologically.Good luck.

Quote from Allclear came back at £1393 single cover or £1583 annual trip. Like you say not cheap but God knows I need a little break. Thank you.

Don’t give up trying to get the travel insurance. I found Insurance With to be very helpful and reasonable. Although it can be very disheartening giving the same information over and over to different companies, but keep trying, you need this holiday.

Have a look at Macmillan’s Cancer & Buying Travel Insurance pages for useful info.

Good luck, please let us know how you get on.

Thank you so much. I truly do need a break to be 10 years clear then bam MBC is a real kick in the teeth I feel so angry. I was originally diagnosed at 40 so still relatively young. I will let you know how I get on. Thank you x

I recently got annual insurance with All Clear travel insurance 0800 640 4829. I got an annual multi-trip covering Europe (no skiing!) . They need you to have recent a stable scan and not to be 'terminal'.. This is important, they wont insure terminal people.. Everyone in this life is 'terminal', I take the view that I have not been told that I am in a terminal phase, therefore I am not terminal for insurance purposes. I wanted annual cover as trip-based is more expensive.. I shopped around a little, but was in a hurry and others were more expensive. You might find cheaper.. it was around £450 for the year

I may be missing something but…. I live in the US. I was diagnosed MBC de novo over 6 years ago. About 1.5 years into it, I retired early and have been traveling ever since. We have an RV and travel around the US over half of the year. I have to fly home to Minnesota -used to be every 3 weeks now every 4 weeks for my treatments. I don’t have travel insurance and have never had a problem. You get used to your schedule and how you feel and plan accordingly. So I say TRAVEL, TRAVEL, TRAVEL. It is so good for the soul and the mind. Just before COVID, we even took a trip to Hawaii, my last state of our 50. We also took a trip to Ecuador-left after one treatment and returned for the next. Good luck and I hope you find that sunshine!

I understand your point and thinking . I have just started buying travel insurance for bigger trips in the last four years. It paid me back for a trip to Mexico which my oncologist didn't want me to go on while I was in chemotherapy in March 2020 just prior to the pandemic. I have a friend who was on a tour in Germany last month and she tested positive for COVID-19 and couldn't come back to the US until she tested negative. She was there an additional 10 days and the travel insurance paid for the hotel and food. Now the airlines are just holding your money if you have to cancel a flight. I have a trip for three weeks to Europe in June which is right in the middle of more chemotherapy. I didn't buy insurance when we booked almost 3 years ago. Now it is too expensive and wouldn't pay for the trip as I have cancer.

I'M not in the UK, but in the US. I've gotten travel insurance by using a travl agent and getting it thru them. This isn't a warm place but one of the best trips I've ever taken was san Alaskan cruise being ion the ship on Glacier Bay was incredible, The ship was the only sign of humanlife. We floated there and hot chocolate was being served on the top deck where only a few of us were. So quiet. Felt like the moments after creation! My memory is a mess but I can remember that in detail. I hope you get to go somewhere as amazing!

BritSammy profile image
BritSammy in reply toPJBinMI

Your trip sounds amazing! In the UK we normally just arrange our own travel insurance and this is usually an easy process and relatively cheap. However, with cancer it’s another matter.
