Sun and ibrance

Hi everyone , I’m wondering if anyone can help with a bit of advice please .

Been on Letrozole ,ibrance 125 mg, for 6 months and so far thank goodness my spine mets are stable and no new liver or lung ones 🤞

I’m on holiday in Cornwall and having lots of sunshine ,use factor 50 on my face and cover up but my nose has broken out in itchy red blotches and so sore !

Has anyone has this problem , I’m assuming it’s a reaction to sun and chemo but just wondering if I can use anything to help .

Thank you all for all your help and advice , your all so comforting and I can’t tell you how much your helping me .

Bless you all xx

Hi, we lived in Cornwall for 8 years. We moved 4 years ago to be near our daughter.

I was told to stay out of the sun whilst on Chemo but I nearly always forget the limit. I also use Factor 50.

We have been in the sun this year as we have an allotment. I must say I haven’t had your problem and I’m on Letrozole and Ibrance (Palbociclib). Maybe you have over done it in the suns rays a bit as you haven’t been on the meds very long. Guess a good moisturiser is the only solution or Aloe Vera after sun.

Hope you get it sorted.

Best wishes

Cheryl

Thanks so much Cheryl , I forget the Cornish sun is so much less polluted and stronger than the north where I live .A lesson learnt and hopefully the Ali’s Vera and moisturiser will settle it ,

Cornwall is so magical .xx

Hi Barbie70

I was warned of the extra sensitivity to sun exposure when starting Palbociclib. But I have had the same problem on the bridge of my nose right from the get-go over two years ago. I plastered on sun protection on top of my Clarins moisturiser with added sun protection, use wide brimmed hats and always take refuge from the sun with my fair, freckled Irish-ancestry skin. It wasn’t a blister more of a red sensitive spot and very minor compared with all the other issues faced with cancer. But nonetheless it was bothersome and on my face.

After trial and error I have come to the conclusion it was not the sun causing the problem but the Clarins moisturiser I have always used. If I don’t use that I don’t have the rash! Hope this helps along with the other great advice you’ve received here.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday in beautiful Cornwall.

Hello BARBIE70,

I was on Ibrance 125 mg and anastrozole 1mg for 10 months, but I was not out in the sun really, at all.

Now I am on Verzenio 150 mg and the same dose of anastrozole, and I have had a very itchy back. My niece took a picture of my back, so I could see what was going on. There seems to be a patch of bumps in one spot. It is SO itchy. I put some Cetaphil cream on it, and it is not itchy anymore.

Not sure if this helps at all.

Cheers,

Colleen

I have never been told by my doctor to avoid the sun while using Ibrance or Letrozole. I am outdoors every day. I play golf 5 or 6 times per week and walk for exercise on the other days. I use sunscreen everywhere, at least a 50, but have never had an issue with a rash, etc. Thank you, Sandra, for explaining why these things might happen. I had never heard that Ibrance would cause photosensitivity. Barbie, hope everything clears up for you. Have fun in Cornwall.

Zinc oxide. In the US you can get it in clear form so it is not so noticeable. It is the most protective of all sun screens, so I’m told. I’m very fair, red head, outdoors all the time in the so Cal and Texas sun and never burn at all since using the zinc oxide.

Oops I did not know this about iBrance, or was allowing myself to remain ignorantly unaware. I’m good about sunscreen at the beach or something like that that but never bother for my daily “in the sunshine” walk!

I’m wondering if you had a reaction to the sunscreen? New brand or even an altered “updated” ingredients can sometimes trigger something like this

I've not had a problem, and hadn't been given this advice. I often work in my garden and hadn't noticed a reaction.

Hi BARBIE70,

I hike daily in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where it is sunny and high altitude about 6,000 ft /2,000 meters?) at my house. So I have a lot of sun exposure. I have found that most brand name sunscreens really cause a problem for me..rash, burning, etc...especially on my face. I am on Ibrance and Letrozole as well. I got myself a large-brimmed hat. It is wonderful. If I am in a situation where I need to wear sunscreen with no hat, like at the beach, I buy the sensitive skin sunscreen for babies, as I don’t seem to react to it. I have also made sunscreen from my sensitive skin lotion, called Vanicream, and zinc powder that I ordered from a creams and lotions ingredient supplier. That way, you have more control over the ingredients. Good luck!

Hi JeniMcCThank you so much for your advice ,I’m going to try out the baby sun creams and look at making my own as well .

It’s my face that really burnt even with Tropic factor 50 so I’ll now take your advice and see how it goes .

Lovely to hear from you and O hope your staying well and loving life

Thank you Sandra for that wonderful explanation. Makes it much more real when it’s explained that way rather than just being told to avoid the sun. To understand the reasons why helps a lot.

I just got back from my first vacation since diagnosed during Covid in January 2020. I went to Miami and sat in the sun for practically the entire day. I am on Letrazole and Ibrance and my oncologist knew I was going specifically to enjoy the beach and she never said a thing. I am a black woman and tan well and definitely tanned quite a bit during my trip. As a matter of fact I was shocked to see how quickly I got super dark. Maybe that is because of Ibrance/Letrazole. I will admit I rarely use sunscreen. Being from the Caribbean I just never got in the habit of doing that as literally everyone in my family back in the islands never do and never have a problem. I am assuming the super fasttrack tanning was due to the meds but didn't think about it until reading the post. I will ask my oncologist what the connection is, if any. These forums are so important because you get so much information from others that the oncologists leave out. Thanks for sharing and asking the question!
