My mom recently had SBRT to 2 tumors on her spine. A neurosurgeon is recommending she do kyphoplasty on her lumbar spine where one of the tumors was to strengthen the bone. She is hesitant and a bit scared given the side effects - has anyone had this procedure before & could you share your thoughts? I really appreciate it.

Kyphoplasty - has anyone had it?
Hi , I had it done in March 2019 when I was first diagnosed with MBC. Mine was To t 6 or 7 (I’ll have to check ) but it was very easy and zero side effects . I had been bad back pain prior bc cancer ate through that bone but since then I have been pain free. With everything I’ve been through with breast cancer In 4 years that was the easiest to me with zero side effects . Good luck and prayers 🙏🏻
Hi! I also had it done in August 2018 to similar area as Amf1983. My MBC diagnosis was based on severe back pain and the kyphoplasty was easy, uneventful and took care of the pain. The vertebrae was so deteriorated that the onco/radiologist said he was afraid radiation without the kyph would totally destroy it.
Good luck with mom's decision. Manon
I also it done in 2017, was easy procedure, for the same reason they are suggesting it for your mom. Prayers going up for your mom.
Hi susie,
My mom had the procedure tuesday and is in a lot of pain today. I’m very worried. Did you have this much pain and how long did it last? She also has pain in her legs
Hi Jac-Genova
Hi I had this procedure approximately 4 years ago . There was no discomfort. It took away 80% of the pain at that time . You are sedated during the procedure It has held my lumbar spine for 4 years with progression . They did L1L2and L4 (now L3 too)There is a lot to be scared of
But not this one.
Take care
Be safe

Thank you Shelby! What do you mean with progression?
The kyphoplasty is used to stabilized the spine vertebra especially in the lower lumbar
area. L....... My understanding is this is to control pain not to treat your mbc in your spine. The chemo you take works on that . I have not been able to control the progression in my lower back but a lot have been successful with the proper drugs. Perhaps others have a different view
Take care

Hi Shelby- my mom had the procedure yesterday and her pain is getting worse. I’m very worried. Did you have this problem? Doctor gave her tylenol with codeine but she is just taking regular tylenol
HI Jac-Genova
I'm so sorry to hear that your mom is having a hard time after her procedure . It is not uncommon for the pain to increase for a short time until the healing starts. Have you started with pain management Through your oncologist or family's doctor . Your mother does not need to be in pain . I was very resistant to pain meds and it was my doctors talking me into it. I started with tramdol then fentanyl and then hydro - morphine . My bone mets is extensive from my neck to the serum ribs scapula hips shoulder blade. Etc. I'm just taking 5 sessions of radiation in my hips and then after that I will be having 2 treatments onto my humus. My daughter is going through some of the the worries that you have . I hope you have others to talk to so you can share. Where are you located . I live in Vancouver British Columbia Canada . At any time you need to talk please reach out . I will be here
Stay safe
Shelby
I had one done last year. It didn’t help at all. It was a very painful procedure as you are not put to sleep, but some people are. I’m still dealing with the pain. The pain dr told me last month there was nothing more he could do for me unless I wanted to have two wires inserted in my back , then connected to a battery pack that would be inserted in my buttock of my choice. lol. The pain management would be controlled from my iPhone. I declined. He has me on three different opioids, morphine, and finally a fentanyl patch, none of which worked. I have 7 fractured vertebrae and I also have a bladder prolapse and I’ve finally gotten a doctor to look at it and insert a pressery to hold it up. Maybe all the pain will go away! Best to your mom. Hope all goes well! Hugs!
