What's juicing?

Hi Ladies,

I've read here and there about juicing.

I presume it's making juice. Could you tell me more about this? What vegetables/ fruit do you use? Mainly, what are the benefits?

Hi Lucie,

There are various forms of juicing. I put a post up recently about green juices. If you go to Kris Carr’s website you can look up some of her recipes and see what you think. I tend to use cucumber, celery, a green apple such as a Granny Smith or a Bramley, cumin, and some spirulina or chlorella. You can also add ginger, carrots, kale, all sorts really. Parsley is very good for you, so whenever I have fresh parsley I like to add some. The key is to find a blend that works for you and to try and keep a higher vegetable to fruit ratio, and not add too much fruit. I hope that helps!

Agreed - my current mix is: cucumber, celery, apple, pineapple, and lemon and I started with Kris Carr's book "Crazy Sexy Juice"

Hi Allison,

I read that book too. I wrote down some of Kris' recipes. I like to add pineapple to my juices every once in a while too, but I haven't done in a while. I batch juiced and froze seven last Friday, so now I am down to my last one before I have to get juicing again for the week ahead. I think I will just get going again tomorrow.

I’ve started doing that too. I worry about losing some of the nutrients but it’s such a process I can’t do it every day. Figure some is better than none. I reuse the plastic gelato containers for that - kids were thrilled bc they got to eat the ice cream first!

Hi Kay,

I can understand how you feel, because I couldn't be bothered to juice every day either. I have just finished my seventh juice from the batch that I made last Friday, so tomorrow I'll start back up with another week's worth of juices. I bet your children were happy about having some ice cream! I used Chinese takeaway containers to freeze the juices and have taken one out each day, leaving it out to thaw. I like the sound of your green juice. I don't add ginger anymore though, as I found it too overpowering. I added garlic one time, but I don't plan on doing that again!

You can divide up your juice into small freezer containers so that it maintains most of micronutrients. Lots of carrots mainly with other things added best.

The idea behind juicing is that you get more of the benefits than you would from eating then because it’s hard to eat that much vegetables. I drink a red juice and a green juice daily, but batch make and freeze them. My red juice is beets, carrots, and turmeric. My green juice is kale, parsley, ginger, green apple, celery, and romaine or cucumbers. Sometimes pear if I have.

Yes, Longo is amazing, lots of research.I keep this form of eating successfully for three years. I remain believing in this and now try to do about 16 hours from nite to morning. I have to be more careful now because of liver involvement and reducing weight issues. I will definitely do his pre chemo regime whenever I begin IV again which I figure is in my maybe not too distant future.

Hello Lulu,

I love to juice fruits and vegetables. I make enough for two days but I recently bought a freezer so I could do up a big batch and freeze it. I think it is a very healthy way to build up my immune system and so I highly recommend that you do it. I have a very high quality juicer and it is easy to clean. So you might be wise to pay a bit extra to get a juicer that is easy to clean. The old Braun juicer I had years ago was such a pain to clean that I just got rid of it That was a mistake because juicing is very healthy. Until I was diagnosed with mbc I didn't get back into juicing. My daughter bought me my quality juicer so I am now happily juicing again. I also use my Ninja to make fruit smoothies and some days I alternate between having a smoothie and having a veggie juice.

I usually juice cucumbers, celery, carrots, beets, kale and cabbage as well as apples and sometimes I add peppers and zucchini.

I am happy to hear that other women in this community are juicing. I think it will help us stay well. Hugs Marlene
