My father is suffering from metastatic brest cancer. Doctor prescribed him palbociclib 125 mg. But it's too costly. Can anybody suggest how to get it in subsidised price.

They have compassion program you call them directly and as for details. Your province might subsidize. I am cdn and my doctor helped us get on compassion program. But they also wanted me part of trial which helped

Which country are you from? Usually Pfizer has a patient assistance program. Ask your oncologist about this.

Amitdas,

Check with Pfizer as they have a program to help with cost and also your oncologist usually has someone on staff that knows of places that will help with cost. Best of luck. Blessings Hannah

But that programme for female only not for male.

I don't think sex has anything to do with it. You should try. Are you in the UK? Wishing you good luck and peace as you get this worked out. Blessings, Hannah

I'm so sorry that you and your dad are having to deal with this issue, on top of the diagnosis/disease...I have no idea what laws/the legal system are like in India (or even in my own country, tbh) but is there an elected official, gender equality organization, or attorney you can contact? This seems like clear cut discrimination caused by basically an administrative assumption that only women get this disease....I know it takes *a lot* of effort and energy to fight the system, but maybe someone in your "circle" can take this on? Every once in a while, just making noise gets someone an exception?

Wishing you the very best with this...

Hello, amitdas!

I would suggest that you contact your oncologist immediately! If he/she contacts Pfizer directly, they will cover ALL YOUR COSTS! They have an annual program to apply for coverage, so you should download the paperwork, sign it, and get it signed by your oncology team!

Good luck to you!

But that programme is for female candidate. For male I heard no programme like that..

That makes no sense. A patient with MBC should not be discriminated by gender. I would definitely follow up with your father's oncologist. God bless you and your dad and many prayers for his care.

Already discussed Pfizer. They said programme only for female

WOW! That seems crazy. Then I would pursue resources through your dad’s oncology team or through local cancer agency. I wish you luck with this, knowing that the financial burden can be so stressful.

Both you and your dad are in my heart and prayers.

What is the medicine cost in your country

SeattleMom profile image
SeattleMom in reply toamitdas

If I remember correctly, it was over US$10,000 per monthly prescription of 21 pills. Astronomical! Impossible without financial aid. There has to be a way your dad can receive assistance with this cost.

If you’re in the US contact your local federal and state representative. They are there for constituent services to point you in the right direction. In the US it is illegal to discriminate based on gender

Irrelevant reply: she seems to be in India and the Pfizer program I am on is only for women, oddly. I just have to send my tax return every year. -- But you are on Martha's Vineyard now?! I just left. Had to get back to NY for Rx. Easier here. Don't have to go to Boston or Falmouth.

Hi Amitdas, Ask your father's oncologist whether he could be started on tamoxifen while you work out how to cover the cost of palbociclib (Ibrance in the USA). I have been on tamoxifen for metastatic breast cancer for over a year, and it's working so far. Your father has nothing to lose by trying tamoxifen which is the cheapest by far of all cancer drugs.

What's is the cost in your country

In Canada, the cost of tamoxifen is about $10 a month. Even that cost is covered by the cancer clinics here in Canada. My understanding is that the cost of palbociclib to our health system is about $6000 per patient per month. I disagree with our supporting the greed of the big companies like Pfizer so I will only take their meds if I have no other choice. Anyway, I believe you should be able to get tamoxifen quite cheaply in India. Ask your doctor for a prescription. Many men (body builders) in North America take tamoxifen which I understand is manufactured in India so it should be available.

Good luck! I think your father is fortunate to have such a caring son!

If you have already checked with your oncologist and they have said no then get a second opinion. That doesn't sound right getting a refusal for based on gender.

What country are you in?

Cheers, June S.

India

Twenty-six months until Pfizer's patent expires/generics are possible (but they're not always a lot less expensive, although we can always hope...)! From the world-wide web:

The patents that cover palbociclib will expire in January 2023, in both the United States and Europe.

So not sure what the date is in India and elsewhere...
