Great photo! Bugsy is beautiful! Several years ago, on another site, there was a woman with mbc whose horse had a cancer that caused it to lose part of it's tail but they still competed together and won their last event, with western tack. I was so moved by horse and rider both having cancer!

I remember this...as you say it was remarkable for both to return to competing...sheer determination

Yes it was my last competition before the dreaded mbc diagnosis..he was well behaved and I rode well..we came third in the end..really chuffed with that

Happy memories

Well clearly he's in love with you without a doubt.

Bugsy looks like a dedicated horse eager to please.

And look at you Barb, don't you look fabulous, never forget how bright your spirit is and can continue to be with the right shift of perspective.

If you can't ride Bugsy anymore, I would reach out to the horse community and see if there is a rider w/out a horse who would love a part-time mentor.

Even if it was just 1 or 2 hours a week the rider would have an opportunity of a lifetime training on Bugsy, I bet you and Bugsy would love it.

They would have to agree to signing a simple liability release.

Something to ponder and perhaps look into.

Love the photo!!

On a side note: Wish my Mom took a photo of me riding back in the 70s when I use to ride English. I only competed once, and won champion for a walk, trot, cantor competition.

Unfortunately it was too expensive to continue classes and the drive out to the country was too long for my Mom in spite of the owners encouraging my potential.

Perhaps that's why I suggested the mentorship.

Hi Sue

My daughters ride so Bugsy would never be without a rider...we all adore him

Shame about you not having a photo of your day of glory...I don’t have any of me from back then either..nice memories though

I never had a horse of my own till I started working and that was the first thing I did buy (after getting a house mortgage)... my parents were quite poor and could only afford lessons and occasional trekking holidays so I worked at my local stables when I could just to be around them...dedication

How long have you had Bugsy Barb?

Barbteeth profile image
Barbteeth in reply toJoyBe

11 years...I bought him originally for my daughter as a show jumper but he was a bit naughty sometimes and she got nervous of him..so I took him over as Monty was more of a Hunter...I ended up training Bugsy for dressage which he likes..both of them are part of the family

Hi Barb,

You looked so happy riding and competing with Bugsy. I'm happy for you that you can still ride, even though you are not competing anymore.

Well if my back behaves I might have a go again ....driving the horse box and all the stuff that goes with it can be tiring..my daughter can help me though but not the driving
