Surgery
Ask questions. Read up on your surgeon. Get a second opinion. I wish you had my experience (where I've been going to the same surgeon now for 20 years. We already know each other and we have a comradery) Trusting my surgeon's skills and the way he treats each patient with sincere concern .. helps relieve surgery fear for me. I hope it all works out for you. There is a lot to think about but nothing to worry about! (I told myself that a lot to stay calm)
A major surgery is frightening and especially with the idea of possibility becoming diabetic. We often have to weigh the good and the bad to decide what we want to do, and it's nerve-wracking. Wishing you the best.
I'd be talking with my onc and possibly my primary care doctor, too, about this. I have been with them a long time and trust them to lay all the cards on the table, and I respect their opinions. I'd want to hear about long term effects of both this surgery and not having it, both regarding pancreas function and cancer. My brother has type 2 diabetes and has done really well with diet and exercise. He has found what we can and cannot eat to keep his blood sugar level under control, and his exercise is walking. I know that not all diabetics can gain easy control of their sugar levels, and that would be something I would chat with all my docs about. Frankly, I would be more concerned about cancer than about diabetes. But that is me. I might also ask my onc about the possibility of radiation or giving chemo a try. I'd just want to know all my options.
