exam chaperones

Has anyone ever been asked to grant permission to allow the exam chaperone into the room? Also has anyone denied her and still been treated ?

Yes. Before every encounter with a doctor in the giant health system our family doctor works for they ask in writing whether we consent to the presence of a “medically trained chaperone” (whatever that is). I always answer “no” and the exam goes forward as scheduled. In our state, doctors are required to offer but not required to have a chaperone present, unless they’re under an uncommon disciplinary order for engaging in unethical behavior.

I had the doctor just surprise me with a chaperone. it only happened once and I froze. he asked me if it was OK and I couldn't even answer him. his statement to me was "well she is not here to watch" I didn't reply still I was simply frozen. I never went to that doctors office again. and it was a year before I went to ANY doctor and I didn't allow any intimate exam for about three years. chaperones are generally females, and not at all cool. I would always say NO if I have any advance warning. I do not do female doctors, or see nurse practitioners just not going to happen

Patients should never be ambushed like that. If she wasn’t there to watch she had no reason to be there.

I went for a rectal examination the other week, I was slightly taken aback when the Doctor asked me if I wanted a chaperone present, I had never even given it a thought & said No & that I was fine with just the 2 of us. Although at the follow up hospital appointment there was a Doctor & a Nurse present all the way through, again I never questioned it.

I don’t make appointments with female doctors for anything below the belt and I surely wouldn’t allow a female observer. It isn’t a spectator sport. I have suffered way too much embarrassment and humiliation from past experiences that involved female nurses. I find it to be inappropriate no matter how many times people keep saying that they are professionals . I don’t present myself naked in front of a woman unless she is doing the same which puts us on the same level of vulnerability in an intimate relationship.

I don’t possess that magical switch that they claim to have to turn off any thoughts or judgments about the man they are looking at and touching. These are the same people that go home turn that magical switch back on and find her husbands penis to be sexually arousing ?

A recent study found that the medical profession had the highest rate of adulterous relationships by large percentages above all other professions especially among female nurses . What’s driving that? Maybe all they see? There is to much out there that has been substantiated that the medical field is not always pure and virtuous

But for those that are comfortable with or maybe even enjoy it. Go for it!

had a few appointments with my Doctor chaperone male / female present, not really an issue for me, but I can understand the reasons why some may be embarrassed

I have an academic internist that I see for my yearly exams. I have never once had a chaperone.

I have annual DREs and it does not bother me if the practitioner is a man or a woman. My worry is whether I may have prostate cancer and not the sex of the physician who has their finger up my ass! Get real guys.
