What has your experience been with dealing with a mental illness (depression, stress, anxiety)? A lot of the guys we talk to turn to drugs, alcohol, etc. What are some more positive strategies we can tell our members for dealing with these mental illnesses?

Hi, personally I have a depression also anxiety but they linked to the fact I was diagnosed last December with Vascula Dementia, I am struggling with this quite a lot, I know I don't have much of a future and for me that is very traumatic. The anxiety is more recently but I also suffer diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Austioarthritis, fibromyalgia, me COPD, chest pains but can't remember the name lol, all in all I try to be as positive as I can and that and my morphine patches and 30 pills and 5 injections, I still manage to smile.
The key thing for me was finding something to help me relax and destress. For me, exercise and playing the guitar worked wonders. Also, once I opened up to my family about my struggles with stress and anxiety, they made time for us to talk especially when I'm away at college (rising senior this fall). Know that you are not alone and find your personal healthy coping mechanisms and you too can overcome problems. While it's not a cure, it works wonders on your self-esteem and confidence.
