Post ICD exercise following VF arrest

Hi there

Just posted this on the home page but I noticed the community here and decided to post my question here as well

Wasn’t sure if the groups view similar posts

58 yr old male, pretty fit - 10km run every day plus various exercise classes - Pilates, Les Mills, Tai Chi, HIIT, etc - approx 4 weeks ago suffered VF arrest whilst asleep. Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my awesome wife and the NHS

Defib and more stents fitted 3 weeks ago

Starting Cardiac Rehab in 2 weeks but am confused by conflicting advice I’m getting from the Medics

Looking for some personal experiences from people who have had something similar happen and are well on the way to an active life again

I know we are all individuals and the guidelines are there to keep us safe but, as I said, some of the contact with the medical profession has left me feeling pretty clueless as to what I should be doing

I’m getting out for walks just now with no rebound symptoms and I’m feeling positive about the future

Any help would be really appreciated

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My hubby was your age when he had a cardiac arrest and like you thanks to my training and the NHS he survived. Also like you he had an S-ICD implanted. That was now nearly 5 years ago.

The first few weeks he took life a little easy while things healed. Gradually he started to walk each day and increased his pace a little week on week. He finds an iWatch helps monitor his walking/running and his heart rate. He has now nearly forgotten he has the implant except for the weekly download to the hospital.

If you are getting different advice, then I would tell them and ask them to explain why they are giving you different messages. You might also try the BHF nurse helpline is useful. The nurses there are very experienced.

Good luck.

Good morning sturon and thank you so much for replying

That’s really good advice and I was pleased to read of your hubby’s progress. Hopefully in time I’ll be in a similar position

Much appreciated
