Did you get the racey heart before you started the diet....?? I am always watching what i eat, and when i was taking pramipexole i cant say i noticed a racey heart at night. If you think you will sleep ok without taking them, then its worth trying.

Is this a beta-blocka? It would help if Members were told what the drug is for ;-)

Pramipexole is a dopamine agonist med used for RLS. Its also known as Mirapex.

And if you discontinue their use suddenly it can be dangerous (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome) so dicsontinue slowly over several weeks rather than days. Better still in accordance with your doctors instructions.

Pete - my understanding of the research is that this applies to patients with other diseases who take the drug at much higher doses. When stopping pramipexole, you are to taper by .75 mg per day to prevent problems. The current recommendations for pramipexole is to use a max of 75 mg per day as augmentation risk is much higher when used at higher doses. So anyone taking .75 mg a day or less can stop it without any tapering.

Even if someone was taking double or triple this, they'd only need to reduce .75 mg per day and then stop in two or three days.

Oh that's nice and straight forward then. I do take almost the maximum dose as I take Pramipexole for Parkinson's Disease.

thanks,,,its only since i been on diet that it happens

Flissy have you checked the leaflet for possible side effects...?? I would see your doctor and check with him and if you want to come off it, as that can be hard to do. How long have you been taking the pramipexole....?

been taking pramapexol for about 2 years,,i have not had any problems taking it i take 2 at night im cutting it down to 1 at night and see how i go on im going to do this till friday if i seem ok with it i will keep doing it for a couple of weeks just to see if i can manage with that dose

That might help if you can reduce the dose, and it lets you sleep. But if the racey heart continues i would consult your doctor, best to be safe than sorry.. Sometimes medication can turn against us... Keep us informed on how you are doing... :)

yes i will keep up to date as how its all going

Hi,

I took pramipexol for quite a while, and also developed a racey heart.

My doctor sent me to cardiology, and after tests I have very frequent ectopic heartbeats. They are not harmful but very uncomfortable and debilitating. Have been prescribed beta blockers for this.

I have no idea if the pramipexol caused this, but I am now on ropinerol and things are just the same. I suggest you have a word with your doctor, because I find I am better knowing what is going on. Think worry makes things worse.

Good luck, cazx

mail online,,,Restless legs is a syndrome characterised by uncomfortable tickling, burning, prickling or aching sensations in the muscles of the legs.

Sufferers usually find that symptoms develop at night while they are in bed. The condition is quite common, and is thought to affect as many as 15 per cent of the population.

While conventional treatment options for restless legs are limited, natural approaches usually work very well to control or eliminate symptoms.

Because caffeine seems to worsen or trigger the symptoms of restless legs, I suggest that you avoid coffee, tea, caffeinated soft drinks and chocolate.

In practice, certain nutrients can be very effective in controlling restless legs. I have found magnesium to be very useful in this respect, and this may be related to the fact that it has a relaxant effect on muscle tissues.

I generally advise 350-500 mg of magnesium each day in the first instance, though this dose can usually be reduced as symptoms improve.

Magnesium supplementation seems to work particularly well in combination with vitamin E, which itself has been shown to improve the symptoms of restless legs. 400-800 IU of vitamin E should be taken each day.

Just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read :-). It is true that if you are deficient in a mineral or nutrient, you can often improve WED/RLS symptoms by taking it. Most people with symptoms are not deficient in most minerals or nutrients except iron, however, which the article fails to mention. The article fails to tell you what to do if these things do not work for you! It is quite a stretch to write that, "natural approaches usually work very well to control or eliminate symptoms." If that were true, few people would ever post here or on similar boards!

Indeed, it is worth eliminating caffeine, alcohol, and OTC drugs that include dipenhydramine. Magnesium is inexpensive so not a bad idea to buy a bottle. I just wish this article had a bit more balanced perspective an offered help to those for whom these things do not work - like most of us here.

Hyland's Restful Legs tablets has any one took theses from hylands

Hi Flissy, magnesium can help some people, it never helped me with my RLS, And some take it along side their RLS med. I dont know about Vit E, probably you would need to discuss it with your doctor, You shouldnt take any supplements without knowing whether you need them first. Hylands Restful Leg pills i have tried and they didnt help me either.

Its a matter of choice to try stuff out to see if it helps or not. As long as anything you try isnt harmful in any way, or likely to make your RLS worse. Lots of us find that certain food or drinks can make things worse, again its worth trying and see if leaving out certain foods or drinks helps or not.

The US FDA lists the following on their website related to pramipexole (Sifrol):

"Contact your health care professional if you experience any symptoms of heart failure while taking Mirapex, such as shortness of breath – with exercise or at rest; swelling of the feet, ankles, legs, or abdomen; fatigue and weakness, rapid or irregular heart beat; chest pain; or persistent cough or wheezing with white or pink blood-tinged phlegm. Patients have reported swelling of the ankles and/or feet without other signs of heart failure while taking Mirapex."

While you didn't mention any other symptoms of heart failure, this drug is associated with it. I would suggest telling your physician.
