Hi smett, can you give a bit more info to see if we can help. Are you taking any meds for your RLS. that will help if we know what you are taking.

I am on anti depressants Mirtazapine, and on a high dose, I have been having hot flushes lately and this might not help, I always have had restless legs but it was only usually before my period, I haven't had a period for three months but think it could be related to hormones

I just been to look at that anti-d on a website that lots of us look at which is one of the best for info on RLS and medication. Incase you would like to look at it yourself its rlshelp.org the treatment page is the place to look.. most anti-d's can make RLS worse, so i checked on your one, it says it ok to use when having RLS, altho 2 reports of RLS worsening. So, maybe you need to start thinking of using a medication for your RLS, depends on how much sleep you are loosing and if you want to get sleep every night.

I think hormones can have an effect on RLS.

Hopefully someone else can help further and give you more advise as to the hormones and what i have said.

I see that you take Mirtazapine. me, too! It is the only med that has stopped my panic attacks. It "may" bother RLS, but it is not high on the list of "bad" meds at all. Hormones, menopause, all that can disrupt our lseep, RLS or no RLS. We have to do what we have to do to get it under control. Is Mirtazapine the only med you are on, and that includes over the counter meds, too. rlshelp.org has the best list of "Drugs and foods to Avoid", and that is the best place to start. Lots of over the counter meds or "all natural" supplements are not automatcially safe. I am on a high dose of that antidepresant, too, 90 mgs, split up every 12 hrs. But, I take a lot of meds for RLS, also. so, we may be able to help more if we get a little history, how long you have had it, does anyone else in your family have it, etc? It can be genetic, as is the case in 65% of RLSer's. wish we could find the ONE cause of it, but that is a long way away. :( Have you tried any of the apporved meds for rLS, so just so we know where to begin? coping techniques are extremely important, so rlsrebel.com is good web site for that. Keep us posted.

I have had restless legs for as long as I can remember and usually before my period, my mum used to get rsl but think she is ok now, I shall look into the link, when I spoke to my doctor she wasn't too interested said it could be hormonel she gave me some Sulphate Qu(something) and said I could only take them for three months after two and half months I stopped taking them as they weren't making any difference,

I'm on the Neuro patch, but still get the occasional night's interruption. Although I too smoke ( mostly e-ciggies now), I find the best option to find sleep again is to have a big bowl of porridge or cereal, together with a sleeping tablet prescribed by my GP for these odd occasions. This has a soporific effect, and after half an hour or so's reading or whatever, am so tired I can barely make it back to the bedroom. As for the potential weight-gain issue - I'm subsequently just not hungry at breakfast time - just a coffee and an e-ciggue suffices. Good luck.

Mitarzapine has on the information leaflet that it can cause restless legs. I would ask your doctor to try an alternative that will not aggravate your RLS. Also smoking is a stimulant. There is no evidence either way regarding RLS to the best of my knowledge but that could aggravate your RLS, a bit like caffeine does for many.

i've heard that too ( that loads folk that gave up smoking ) so im not going to stop..... not risking mine getting worst ..... blimmy i'd never sleep then :(

I've been keeping track of the severity of my restless legs and have noticed they become dramatically worse starting about 2 weeks before my period. As it gets closer, they get worse. As soon as I get it, they relax. Any suggestions why?

Its driving me nuts, i cant describe the feeling of it to anybody, its like your legs have a mind of their own, the involuntary movements, kicking like im some kind of ninja lol, the feeling of the need to kick and stretch it out..but the more you kick and stretch mine seems to get worse, like ive already said about the involuntary movements, other things happen involuntary, eg. I'll swear..clench my fist..swear again...my leg will do a quick sharp kick (or a few)..then il swear again.. My husband actually goes out of the way if he see's it starting, because ive punched and kicked him, when im having a episode. After 4 nights without any sleep,it reduces me to tears.I hate the feeling in my legs the next day,a really weird horrible feeling of heavy, numbness.
