A small study seems to indicate that RLS is triggered in genetically predisposed people by Viruses & infectious agents.

Obviously it's a small study and further detailed research will be needed to confirm the preliminary findings.

I found it interesting because MS is caused/triggered by Epstein Barr Virus.

30% of MS also have RLS. So clearly genetic predisposition PLUS the virus are needed to trigger RLS.

MS research is looking at anti viral therapy. Perhaps that research will also help RLS patients.

Viruses are notorious for triggering neurological disease.

Yet again- more funding and more research are essential for RLS.

Hello Joolsg, that’s very interesting because my RLS became much worse before I became unwell, either with a cold or something more serious and continued until I was better where my RLS went back to it’s original debilitating self.

Kind regards HipHop1972

We really are in the dark when it comes to viruses, pathogens etc. It's amazing how arrogant we are with regards to medicine despite our large gaps in knowledge. Even the shingrx vaccine has been shown to reduce risk of dementia.

This is so fascinating, thanks for sharing this Jools!

Fascinating- I’ve noticed my RLS lets up when I’m really sick with a bad cold or covid.

Yes- many people report that. It is possibly because infections cause inflammation & serum ferritin increases. If only someone would do detailed research on the many causes of RLS & they could then work on new medications.

We are running out of meds!
