THC and RLS

I have had good results from THC in gummies. However, you must try several kinds to find one that works as I have noticed a great deal of variation on the effects, even in the same batch.

Sometimes I don't feel it at all and other times it seems that I need only a little bit. In general, I think that the THC "submerges" the RLS so that you can sleep. I am averaging 5-9 hours sleep a night. Since I don't often have to get up early, and I get my best sleep after 5 am in the morning, if I count only the hours before 5 am, I get up to 5 hours of sleep a night if I take gummies and go to bed at midnight.

This summer, I started with 5 mg THC gummies but now I use 10 mg ones (better buy). I found that CBN and CBD seem to inhibit sleep instead of helping so you want to avoid those at least in the beginning to see if THC works for you without any other stuff.

The cool thing is that I am well-rested in the AM, not groggy, and I don't get the munchies at all at night.

Here are some guidelines for anyone wanting to try this. It is only my experience but it is definitely worth it.

• Buy gummies with Indica THC from a small manufacturer: I was told that a smaller manufacturer rotates their cannabinoid sources so you don't get habituated to one strain.

• You need the Indica type, not Sativa. Most Indica strains are berry flavored (the dispensary told me this is the industry practice)

• Make sure that your gummies are solventless. They sometimes use industrial solvents to extract the THC.

• Don't buy chocolate edibles as chocolate can make RLS worse.

• Make sure that the gummies don't have CBN or CBD in them, as this can interfere with the effects of the THC and with your results. I tried edibles with both of these first and didn't think that they worked. If I had stopped there I might not have known that THC alone works for me.

• Avoid gummies for sleep that include Melatonin which can stimulate RLS.

---------- How to take the gummies ----------

• Try half a gummy (or less) about an hour before you go to bed.

• Allow it to dissolve in your mouth, don't chew it.

• It takes a while to kick in. I find the effect will go through a bit of a bell curve, slow to begin, relaxation, then high (a gentle high, but be careful—you can get a bit dizzy), and then soon after the high it abates.

• I often take the other half at bedtime because RLS can set in and I want to continue the effect so the high from the second half can come in while I am sleeping and before the first half has worn off.

• I often wake up at night so if I need it I will take more.

Last night I took only a quarter gummy on the second round and it lasted me all night! Also, on sale right now are Galaxy gummies, which at 25 mg are strong but you can always cut them down. Keep a record of what you are eating and taking, especially at night.

If anyone has questions, just let me know.

The reason why chocolate makes RLS worse is the sugar content, if you make sure that the chocolate contains little or no sugar it shouldn't affct RLS in the small amounts on gummies. Usually chocolate which is dark (around 80-90%) is low in sugar but that's not always the case.

I've managed to eliminate my RLS by concentrating on lowering my systemic inflammation which is caused by foods, basically avoiding refined seed oils and refined carbs (sugars and starches).

Thank you for this info: I suspected that it was the sugar in chocolate that was the culprit.

Thanks for your in-depth commentary. I noticed that you stated that you wake up during the night. Have you had your Cortisol Levels checked? I had mine checked by my Functional Medicine Doctor and discovered that my levels were out of wack. Us RLS victims are prone to it due to the stress of dealing with it. I was able to get mine under control by taking a combination of Ashwanda, Valerian Root Extract, L Thealine, and GABA. Also, my RLS symptoms have gotten better, which maybe from the Valerian Root Extract. I had saw somewhere in my research that taking Valerian Root Extract for an extended period of time is beneficial in reducing RLS symptoms. I also have a bad case of PLMD/PLMS, for which I take 20 mg of Baclofen at 4 pm, and 10 mg at 12 midnight, and my final 20 mg dose at 4 am. Baclofen is also prescribed to treat RLS. I tried using Medical THC here in Oklahoma, USA, as it’s legal for medical reasons. In addition, I tried some very top quality CBD , but neither had any impact. There is one formula that I can’t remember the name of, but it’s very powerful, one tiny drop the size of a small grain of rice knocked me out cold. But it was dangerous as I couldn’t safely walk to the bathroom at night without the fear of falling down. I glad to hear that your protocol is working for you. I would highly recommend all RLS sufferer’s to have their Cortisol levels asap. Luckily, here in the States if you can find a good Functional Medicine Doctor they can turn your life around. If anyone is interested in learning more about Functional Medicine, I would encourage them to find Dr Mark Hymen on YouTube, he is one of the early pioneers in the field. **I would like to get some feedback from anyone who has had problems with Cortisol the recommendation herb to treat it is Ashwanda. But, anyone who has tried Valerian Root Extract for an extended period of time, please let me/us know your experience with it? Wayne T.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions. Not sure how you check for cortisol levels. I have tried all those supplements you mention but separately. The formula you mention is called Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), named after the man who cured his cancer with it.

You can test Cortisol levels by a Saliva test, or a blood test. I’m guessing Saliva is more accurate. I’ve had both. I suggest this link healthline.com/health/high-...

When you take the gummies do you take any rls medication such as methodone or oxycodone. I don't sleep at night so I would like to try the gummies but since I am taking methodone I hesitate to take them.

I don't take any pharma. I would do a search online for each medicine and see if it interacts with cannabis. "Cannabis and methodone" for example.

I checked recently for a friend of mine whether cannabis would interfere or interact negatively with the drugs that she takes and couldn't find any studies. If you find no problems when you do your research I recommend starting with a tiny fragment of one gummy. Wait 1-2 hours to see how you do. Most gummies are not that strong so a fragment of one should be fine—as long as you don't find any counter indications online.

I take oxycodone to control my restlessness and a 100mg capsule of CBD and a 25mg Delta 9 THC Indica gummy nightly. I do alternate the Delta 9 gummy with a 50 mg Delta 8 Indica gummy so I’m not taking the same thing every night. I wake up once or twice but fall back to sleep quickly. I’m not groggy in the morning. I wish you the best in finding the “recipe” that works for you.
