Apixaban and iron

I am taking Apixaban 5mg bd and iron bisglycinate 60mg.

Is the iron reducing the effectiveness of the Apixaban and vice versa?

If so, what is the solution to raising the ferritin levels?

Yes they reduce the effectiveness of each other. iron binds with blood thinners, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the blood thinners and of the iron so check with your doctor. Take iron supplements 3 to 4 hours apart from blood thinners to avoid interactions. Perhaps take Apixaban in the morning and your iron at night.

Thanks Sue

I take Apixaban twice daily but definitely at least 3 hours before the iron.

I will check with the GP and maybe the cardiologist. Are you able to guide me in the direction of any UK research which refers to this?

I did not find where it said 3 to 4 hours apart although there are lots of article discussing the interactions between the two. I did find another article not on that subject you might be interested in health.clevelandclinic.org/...

Thanks again. I was aware of the information in the first article and I had read the second. The problem is that UK GP’s do not like foreign research.

I can’t find anything from the UK 😤

Hi Dires, how often do you take the iron may I ask?

Alternate days

DesertOasis reminded me that I am not sure whether I ever told you to take it every other day. Also you can increase your iron by eating lots of iron rich foods as blood thinners won't be affected by that.

I take it alternate days (as directed by you Sue).

I do eat a pretty good diet.
