Hi all. An update from my last post. I weaned myself off Sifrol after taking since 2016. I commenced taking 100mg of high absorption Magnesium (2 of a morning and 2 of an evening), 500mg of high absorption Vitamin C morning and night and one high absorption Iron tablet a day. Sleeping so much better, no more gambling and more or less no RLS symptoms!

Hi KPPA, this is an outstanding result! Are you on any medication at all? Do you take potassium also, or any other supplements?

Did you have your iron levels tested before you started on Sifrol? And had you ever supplemented with oral iron / had an iron infusion before now?

Ive had plenty of iron tests whilst on Sifrol. My gp didnt seem to have an issue with my feritin sitting at 28. I've since self learnt to best manage RLS it should be sitting around 100. Im booked for bloods soon to check iron and Magnesium levels and plan to monitor my levels a lot closer than before. I've never had an iron infusion. Hoping the iron tablet will assist.

Hi KPPA, me again! Regarding the blood test for magnesium, I’ve read that most of our magnesium is contained within our cells so a simple blood test can’t determine whether there is a deficiency. For instance, my blood level of magnesium is in the middle of the normal range but I suspect I am deficient. I’m wondering how we will monitor our levels. Any thoughts on that?

Also, how long did it take from stopping the Sifrol until you reached the status of more or less no RLS symptoms? Did you take another medication in the interim, such as codeine, while you built up your iron and magnesium stores?

Hi😀. In terms of monitoring my Magnesium intake I guess if my bloods show a normal reading of Magnesium I will take this as ok. As long as I remain in a normal level Ill continue to take the Magnesium......Once I completely weaned myself off sifrol I immediately began taking the Magnesium, Iron and vit C. After 3 days I was near symptom free. I was suprised at how fast it was! No other medication used.

That sounds like a good plan.

…Wow that is incredible! Did you use any opioids (codeine, tramadol etc) during your weaning off of the sifrol? I still have RLS, yet I’ve been taking a good magnesium and vitamin C for a few month, plus I have ample ferritin due to an iron infusion I had last year. I’m wondering if the codeine I’m currently on is causing the RLS to continue, because I’ve read that RLS can be an opioid withdrawal symptom.

Perhaps I just haven’t taken enough magnesium. I’ve increased the magnesium bisglycinate I take, and ordered the same one you take (just in case it’s magical 😆).

Ps. I have a very not insightful gp when it comes to RLS so I've done my own research so I now tell him what I am doing and requesting more regular blood tests to keep check on levels.

I’m in the same boat. I also tell my GP what I need. I’m glad he listens and generally prescribes what I want. 😁

I never used anything whilst weaning off Sifrol. It was hell on earth, the worst symptoms yet but I survived! I have read you need to take high dose of Magnesium, my 400mg daily seems to be doing the trick however. I'm actually feeling extreamly lucky given some of the stories I've read re the management people have tried or are trying.
