Menopause

This is a post on behalf of my daughter who inherited her rls from me 😒She is peri-menopausal at the moment but thinking about hrt in the future.

She has heard stories that some people have had their rls symptoms dramatically worsen when taking hrt.

We were wondering if any of you have any thoughts or experience of this.

That is true for most people but not all. The reason is it contains estrogen. Was her RLS worse during pregnancy? If so it is then more likely, but of course the only way she will know is to try it.

Yes it was worse during Pregnancy, thank you for replying.

Also check her iron levels.

Pregnancy RLS may also be caused by the baby stealing iron in the third trimester.

I started and stopped HRT. Made my RLS much worse. Sorry 😔

HRT also made my RLS much worse. I would take it again in an instant if I could. ☹️

I had rls during pregnancy (14 years ago) but it went away a few weeks after I started taking iron supplements, I watched Davina's McCall's programme on Menopause on channel 4 where a woman had awful rls and started taking hrt and her symptoms went away, so I thought perhaps this what was wrong with me, so I started hrt but it made no difference to my rls, it didn't help nor did it make it worse. I take the bio identical oestrogen gel and I have the mirena coil, they have really helped my menopause symptoms, I think it's a case of your daughter trying hrt and if it makes her rls worse then she will know it doesn't suit her. I might also add, the hrt patches didn't agree with me at all.

I’ve been on topical HRT since March this year and I’ve not noticed any increase in RLS symptoms. My RLS is pretty well controlled though by 300mg Pregabalin daily. I don’t believe it’s made it any worse for me, and I’m also not sure if it’s only the tablet form that has that undesirable effect or all kinds of HRT.
